Happy Spring, GW Engineering Community!
April not only represents the newness of what spring can bring, but it also represents the harvest of seeds sown. This month we witnessed the amazing results of the efforts and investments made by our faculty, students, staff, alumni and friends.

The University celebrated its Third Annual Giving Day and raised a total of more than $1.2M from over 3,100 donors, including more than $74k for GW Engineering to support our transformative programs and provide students with resources to succeed. Our goal this year was to have as many people donate as possible, regardless of the gift size. I’m proud to report that the number of gifts to GW Engineering this Giving Day increased by almost 150% over 2022 (from 81 to 202), and we exceeded our donor count goal by a greater percentage (55%) than any other school or college at GW (the next highest was 25%). To see our engagement continue to expand speaks to our community’s commitment to our students and to innovation and impact.
On April 25th, we held the inaugural GW Business & Policy Forum: Attacking Cybersecurity Risks. This forum was a collaborative effort between GW Engineering, GW Business, the College of Professional Studies and GW Law. The forum brought together global leaders from both the public and private sectors who emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing the growing concerns around the best ways to address global cyber threats and its impact on our daily lives. During the forum, we formally introduced our Cyber@GW pan-university initiative, which is being led by Computer Science Associate Professor Adam Aviv and will coordinate and enhance cybersecurity research, education, and outreach activities across campus.
On April 28th, our undergraduate and graduate students presented their innovative research and design projects at our Annual R&D Showcase. More than 250 students participated this year from all six of our departments and even from other schools and colleges that are collaborating with GW Engineers. The Showcase is one of my favorite events of the year and always reminds me of GW Engineering’s unique value proposition – our students are the next generation of innovators, leaders and change-makers.
As we close out April and move toward summer (and toward graduation for many of you!), I encourage each of you to take time to reflect on this academic year – think about what you have learned and accomplished and who in the GW Engineering community has helped make that possible. When you do, give them a word of thanks. And when you receive a word of thanks, take pride in knowing that you are part of what makes GW Engineering so special.
Raise High! John Lach

| Improving DoD Intellectual Property Transactions through Game Theory |
Little research exists around the potential to apply game theory techniques and analysis to U.S. defense acquisitions with a substantial intellectual property (IP) licensing component. Dr. Ekundayo Shittu and Dr. Zoe Szajnfarber, Professors from the Engineering Management and Systems Engineering (EMSE) Department at GW, in partnership with collaborators at George Mason University, will be expanding this area of research by using their recently awarded one-year, $812,414 Department of Defense (DoD) grant to conduct the project, “AIRC Game Theory Application to DoD Intellectual Property (IP) Transactions.”

West Point Honors Alumni Professor Jon Deason |
Professor and co-Director of the Environmental & Energy Management Institute, Jon Deason, was recently honored by his undergraduate alma mater with a “Serve With Integrity Award.” In October 2021, the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, began granting the “Serve With Integrity Award” to members of its 1970 class who have performed exceptional service to the Nation, the Military, West Point, or the class. Since then, 58 awards have been given with Professor Deason being the most recent.

ECE Assistant Professor Payman Dehghanian and his team were awarded a $2.82M NSF contract for the project, “Foundations for Improving Resilience in the Energy Sector against Wildfires on Alaskan Lands (FIREWALL)”, a four-year multi-institutional multidisciplinary effort among GW, the University of Alaska at Anchorage, the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Washington State University. The national effort is supported by the Navigating the New Arctic (NNA) program, one of NSF’s 10 Big Ideas that supports fundamental convergence research across the social, natural, environmental, engineering, and computing & information sciences. Alaska has witnessed high-intensity wildfires that are projected to increase due to climate change and present new and emerging risks to Alaskan energy infrastructure and communities needing electricity for daily life and services. Alaska is especially vulnerable to wildfires due to its isolated electricity grid, its fire-prone boreal forests, and extreme fire behavior, as well as the critical dependence of its rural communities on electricity for health and year-round food supply.

Director of Administration and Operations, Joe Velez, works to ensure our lovely Science and Engineering Hall runs as smoothly as possible, but he is also so much more! Read below to learn more about April's Local Hero, Joe Velez! :
|
| Q: How long have you been working at GW and what is your position?
A: I am the Director of Administration and Operations. I started working at GW in February 2008 within the School of Medicine and Health Sciences. I joined the School of Engineering and Applied Science in June 2022. I selected a waffle maker as my 15-year anniversary present from the University and I am very happy with that decision.
Q: What led you to this career?
A: My early ambition was to work in college athletics but I found myself being drawn to the academic side of things. While I'm still fascinated with the business side of athletics, I'm happy with the experiences that I have had in working with faculty, staff, and students here at GW.
Q: Why did you choose GW?
A: I accepted a position at GW so that I could take advantage of the tuition benefits for a graduate program. The timing was perfect for that period of my life.

Cybersecurity and privacy threats are the number one threat to the global economy, as the cost of cybercrime is projected to grow to $10.5 trillion by 2025. To examine emerging cybersecurity threats affecting national security and resulting in this high cost for businesses, the inaugural GW Business & Policy Forum: Attacking Cybersecurity Risks was held on April 25. This forum was a collaborative effort between the GW’s School of Business, School of Engineering and Applied Science, College of Professional Studies and Law School.
During the forum, GW officially launched its Cyber@GW initiative. Cyber@GW is a pan-university initiative which is being led by Computer Science Associate Professor Adam Aviv and will coordinate and enhance cybersecurity research, education, and outreach activities across campus.
To kick off the forum, President Mark S. Wrighton provided opening remarks: “Cybersecurity is an urgent need for every organization and every person in our society. This forum is unique because it brings together voices from many sectors.”
