For the next couple of months, we will temporarily transition to a monthly schedule, with the newsletter published on the last Fridays of June and July. We will then return to our regular weekly schedule on August 23.

Celline Wijaya joined GHP as a research assistant working on the India Health Systems Reform Project on May 13. Celline is a physician from Indonesia and recently graduated with her master’s degree in global health delivery from Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on health systems and financing, particularly identifying sustainable health financing options in low- and middle-income countries. Celline completed her thesis on assessing the implementation of emergency obstetrical and neonatal care in Indonesia and has previously collaborated with Indonesia’s social health insurance administrator (JKN) and the World Bank's Service Delivery Indicators (SDI) Health Team. Michael Reich Interviewed for "Planeto Futuro"
Michael Reich, Taro Takemi Professor of International Health Policy, Emeritus, was recently interviewed by Patricia R. Blanco for El País’s “Planeto Futuro” series. In the article, Blanco talks to Reich about the World Health Organization’s treaty on pandemics, which is still in negotiations. To learn more, check out the El País article (in Spanish).

The Lown Scholars Program was established in honor of Dr. Bernard Lown, a world-renowned cardiologist and activist whose career has advanced public health globally. The Program is designed to create an international cadre of talented health professionals who will use public health tools and strategies to prevent cardiovascular diseases and promote cardiovascular health in developing countries, as defined by the United Nations. Since its establishment in 2008, the Lown Scholars Program has supported the work of more than eight dozen Lown Scholars from Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, facilitating productive and long-term collaborations between the Scholars and Harvard Chan faculty members. Abiodun Adeoye (Nigeria) is an associate professor of cardiology and epidemiologist at the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan/University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, as well as a member of the Center for Genomics and Precision Medicine at the University of Ibadan. He holds an MD in internal medicine from the National Postgraduate Medical College, Nigeria. As a Lown Scholar, Adeoye will examine the association between air pollution and blood pressure variation with dementia in a cohort of older adults in urban/peri-urban and rural areas. Neftali Antonio-Villa (Mexico) is an associate professor at the National Institute of Cardiology Ignacio Chavez in Mexico City and an evidence-based medicine and epidemiology instructor at the Faculty of Medicine of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Mexico City. Antonio-Villa holds an MD/PhD and a specialty in applied statistics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. As a Lown Scholar, he will focus on identifying structural and individual-level correlates of socio-demographic inequalities in cardiovascular mortality in Mexico. Pablo Gulayin (Argentina) is a cardiologist, specialist in public health, and senior researcher at the Institute for Clinical Effectiveness and Health Policy (IECS), Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is also a private practice cardiologist and a graduate professor assistant in the public health department of the School of Medicine at the National University of La Plata. He holds a master’s degree in clinical effectiveness and a PhD from the School of Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires. Ashuin Kammar-García (Mexico) is a researcher in medical sciences at the National Institute of Geriatrics in Mexico City and an instructor in research methodology and nutrition at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Autonomous University of Tlaxcala. He holds a PhD in medical research from National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City. As a Lown Scholar, Kammar-García will examine the impact of direct cash transfers on food insecurity and cardiovascular risk in older rural Mexican adults. Evangelista Malindisa (Tanzania) is a medical doctor with a master’s degree in medical physiology from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. She is in her final year of PhD research at the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences, Tanzania. Malindisa’s work as a Lown Scholar will investigate lifestyle interventions to prevent type 2 diabetes among individuals with high Finnish Diabetes Risk Score (FINDRISC) scores in Mwanza, Tanzania. Harriet Mpairwe (Uganda) is an assistant professor in epidemiology, based at the Medical Research Council/Uganda Virus Research Institute (MRC/UVRI) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) Uganda Research Unit. She holds a PhD in epidemiology from LSHTM, and her Lown Scholars project will focus on the development and validation of a sensitive molecular point-of-care diagnostic test for Strep A in Uganda. Peter Otieno (Kenya) is an epidemiologist and multimorbidity researcher in the chronic disease management unit at the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), based in Nairobi, Kenya. He holds a PhD in multimorbidity of chronic diseases from Amsterdam University Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. As a Lown Scholar, Otieno will focus on the evaluation of community-driven hypertension control among pregnant mothers in Nairobi slums, Kenya. Somen Pradhan (India) is an assistant professor in the department of community medicine at M.K.C.G. Medical College, Berhampur, Odisha, India. He holds an MD from Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Memorial Health Sciences and Ayush University, Raipur (C.G) in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India. As a Lown Scholar, Pradhan will investigate the use of participatory learning action (PLA) tools to improve cardiovascular risk factors among rural adolescents. Global Perspectives on Decentralized Health Systems
This one-week course, which runs from August 5 to 9, 2024, explores the development and implementation of effective health care decentralization policies. Participants will learn to identify which functions benefit from decentralization and understand the necessary capacities at both subnational and national levels to ensure success. The course will be led by Thomas J. Bossert, senior lecturer on global health policy, emeritus. High Quality Health Systems: Assessing Performance and Improving at Scale
This one-week course will run from October 21 to 25, 2024 and will review the conceptual frameworks of health systems and quality of care and discuss how these can be used to organize measurement and performance assessment. This course will be led by Margaret Kruk, professor of health systems, and Diana Bowser, associate dean for research and integrated science at the Boston College Connell School of Nursing.
