Japanese Tea Ceremony at the AHUM Colloquium “How does the Japanese Tea Ceremony fit into Liberal Arts education?”
February 13 - The Japan Center, Lawrence 107
Tuesday 4:15 (Refreshments 4:00-4:15 PM)
Yukari Hirata, Harrington and Shirley Drake Chair in the Humanities; Professor and Chair, Department of East Asian Languages & Literatures; Director, Linguistics Program; Co-Director, Center for Language and Brain
I have been exploring ways to introduce the Japanese tea ceremony as a compelling vehicle for students’ cultural study and embodied learning at Colgate. I will talk about findings from my semester-long tea ceremony practice in Kyoto, my recent tea room renovation project at Colgate by bringing specialists from Japan, and students’ experiential learning in Lawrence Hall. Finally, I will perform a portion of the tea ceremony in the new tea room as a demonstration of multimodal experience, and hope that someone from the audience can be the guest to receive a bowl of tea.

Calligraphy ContestOn December 4, 2023, Colgate’s Japanese Language Intern Sawa Fujimoto hosted a calligraphy event in the Japan Center. Participants learned how to write kanji using special brushes and ink to create the form of Japanese calligraphy called shōdo (書道). After much practice on scrap paper, each student received a blank postcard. The front had a space on which to write the chosen kanji character, and the back was for the address and a written response. Students wrote in Japanese the reason why they chose their character. The postcards will be sent to Japan to be judged in a calligraphy competition.

Tea Room Tatami Installation, Part 2
When Motoyama Hiroshi and Mori Banshou visited campus in October, they took precise measurements of the tea ceremony space in the Japan Center. They took this information back to their shop in Kyoto, where they constructed custom tatami to fit the space. The completed tatami arrived at Colgate on December 11, 2023. On the evening of December 13, students, faculty, and community members came together to help with the installation. Mr. Motoyama was present via Zoom to give directions for correctly positioning the mats into the space. After the installation, participants enjoyed a dinner of Japanese curry.
Many future events will take place in the newly upgraded space, including the spring 2024 course JAPN255 Hidden Japan: Tea Ceremony.
