Tufts Student Life
CONSIDER TELEHEALTH RESOURCES
OCTOBER 17, 2018
Dear Jumbos,
We hope you’re enjoying the beginning of fall. As you delve further into your coursework, approach mid-terms, and begin to make plans for the holiday season, we’re writing with a brief reminder about some of the service available through Tufts’ Counseling and Mental Health Service (CMHS).
Universities and colleges across the United States are seeing an increase in the utilization of mental health services. At Tufts, the staff at CMHS are deeply committed to helping students navigate challenges related to mental health and well-being, and we encourage all students to take advantage of our full range of services. We especially encourage students to consider using two outside resources with which CMHS has recently partnered. Both BetterHelp and iHope provide students with convenient access to telehealth care via text, live chat, phone, and videoconference:
  • BetterHelp is a service covered by Tufts' Student Health Insurance plan and offers its own panel of licensed therapists via ongoing text communications, live chat, phone, video, and groupinars. There is no copay. (Students under a private insurance plan may also use BetterHelp, but will be billed for their services.)

  • iHope is a service accepted by most major insurance plans, including Tufts' Student Health Insurance plan. An iHope therapist meets with you via videoconference and can work with you to develop an effective treatment plan, including cognitive behavior therapy, a form of therapy that has been shown to help people with many conditions, such as insomnia, anxiety, and depression. iHope bills students for a copay according to their insurance plan. If you have the Student Health Insurance, the copay is $5 per visit.

Telehealth resources are a great way to connect with licensed therapists who can offer support similar to an in-person session. You can connect whenever and wherever is most convenient, without having to travel to and from an appointment. Telehealth may be helpful for students seeking long-term care that is beyond the time-limited counseling services offered by CMHS. It can also be a supplemental resource for students who have upcoming counseling sessions with staff at CMHS or with a local provider in the community. If you require a private space to access BetterHelp or iHope, contact Health and Wellness’ Business Office, and we will arrange a space for you at Health Service.
We hope you find the information above helpful. Please be in touch with CMHS whenever we can offer assistance or support.
Sincerely,
Counseling and Mental Health
