ART X FASHION CLOSING THIS MONTH
|
Closing April 19th, Art X Fashion looks at the entangled and shifting relationship between fine art and fashion – typically considered a "decorative" or "applied" art. Featuring more than 140 objects, including garments, accessories, textiles, photographs, and original artworks drawn from MFIT's permanent collection, Art X Fashion challenges the traditional hierarchies of visual culture, presenting fashion and art each as parallel, potent expressions of social, intellectual, and creative forces. See below or visit our exhibitions page for more details.

THE INVISIBLE ART OF DRESSING AN EXHIBITION, AND MORE WITH PBS ALLARTS
|
MFIT Assistant Conservator Callie O'Connor walks PBS AllArts' Museum Club through some of her purposely invisible work in exhibitions such as Art X Fashion. These two videos highlight the work of the museum's conservation department, from custom-made mounts and support for dressed objects to the historical and contemporary bodies of mannequins that help shape the fashions they wear. | OBJECT OF THE MONTH
Inexpensive ready-to-wear like this circa 1894 shirtwaist made fashion accessible to greater numbers of people. However, increased factory production brought with it many unsafe conditions. March 25th was the 115th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, a tragedy that led to labor reforms.

FORGET AI. 2026 IS THE YEAR OF THE FASHION ILLUSTRATOR
Is 2026 the year of the fashion illustrator? Artists are feeling optimistic!
IS THE TIARA THE NEXT VIRAL ACCESSORY?
The glittery headpiece can feel subversive or princessy, depending on the context—and that tension is what makes it interesting. "The princess thing is so infantile but seems to be coming back in a big way," Dr. Valerie Steele tells Harper's Bazaar in regard to the rising popularity of tiaras. What is it about princesses right now? Well, she sees "a kind of hardening of gender stereotypes at the same time that we're seeing, with other young people, sort of gender fluidity" that contributes to old-fashioned ideas of femininity.
A CAMPUS MUSEUM UNLIKE ANY OTHER
