News from Sydney Cancer Partners Welcome to our second Newsletter for 2023. As we head towards the middle of the year we are reflecting on our achievements over the past 6 months.
We have been working hard with our partners Maridulu Budyari Gumal (SPHERE) and NSW Regional Cancer Research Network on a number of initiatives to enhance collaboration and streamline processes. More about some of those activities are featured below.

Announcing the successful applicants of the SPHERE/Sydney Cancer PartnersStrategic Enhancement Grants
Maridulu Budyari Gumal (SPHERE) Cancer CAG and Sydney Cancer Partners (SCP) have awarded two Strategic Enhancement Grants, a joint and co-funded initiative designed to build translational cancer research capacity in NSW. The scheme supports leaders of mature, translational cancer research programs which span both SCP and SPHERE member institutions, to facilitate successful applications for significant funding from national, international or commercial sources.
Professor Jeff Holst from UNSW Sydney and Associate Professor James Wilmott from The Melanoma Institute Australia & The University of Sydney will co-lead a project to validate a physiological ex vivo platform to rapidly test novel immunotherapy combinations in patient tumours.Professor Hilda Pickett from the Children’s Medical Research Institute & The University of Sydney and Associate Professor Liz Caldon from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research are coming together to lead a program investigating telomere remodelling in drug resistant breast cancer.
Each team has been awarded $280,000 over two years with funding from the Cancer Institute NSW’s Translational Cancer Research Capacity Building grants held by Sydney Health Partners and Maridulu Budyari Gumal (SPHERE).

NSW Cancer Research Education (CREd) Portal Launched
The CREd Portal is a SharePoint site hosted by NSW Health that provides a space for coordination of education activities and resources.
It supports knowledge-sharing and collaboration between cancer researchers across the state. SCP members received an invitation last week to join the portal. If you did not receive an invitation please check your junk email. For more infomation visit our website.

NSW Cancer Research Education Seminar Series
SCP in conjunction with NSW Regional Cancer Research Network and Maridulu Budyari Gumal (SPHERE), are pleased to host the NSW Cancer Research Education Seminar Series. Seminars are scheduled for the 3rd Tuesday of every month.

Sydney Cancer Partners Funding Opportunities
Consumer Reimbursement and RemunerationWe have established a process to help researchers engage with consumers by facilitating payment (honorarium) or reimbursement of costs incurred by consumers while engaging in research.
Conference and Travel FundingApplications are now open for round 6 Conference & Travel funding. Funding is available to support members presenting at a national or international conference. Key Dates Round 6: 1 October - 31 December 2023. Applications close 11 August More information and apply
