The Andrews Sisters'
'Sing, Sing, Sing'
June New Charts Also Feature Johnny Mercer & the Pied Pipers, Ella Fitzgerald, & More
| |
The Andrews Sisters at their peak were among the most beloved & memorable of American bands. They are still remembered today as epitomizing the sound & mood of America during the World War II era. Through recordings, concerts, movies, & radio, they became one of the nation's all-time most revered acts. We are happy to announce the publication of their version of 'Sing, Sing, Sing', as arranged by Vic Schoen. Perhaps the definitive example of a Swing Era "warhorse," Louis Prima's classic was made most famous by the Benny Goodman Orchestra. Schoen's arrangement takes the irrepressible enthusiasm of the original & transforms it into a high-energy extravaganza that offers up a good challenge for vocalists & instrumentalists alike.
As the first early rumblings of holiday concert planning are begin to make themselves known, we present our first Johnny Mercer & the Pied Pipers arrangement, adding another classic version of 'Jingle Bells' to the holiday catalog. This Skip Martin chart was recorded in Los Angeles in 1946 by Paul Weston & his Orchestra featuring Mercer & the Pied Pipers. The chart is full of suprising harmonies (both for the ensemble & vocal group), interesting rhythmic shifts, & a raucous shout section.
We also have a new one from the historic team of Ella & Nelson Riddle, another from Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Song Book. 'He Loves and She Loves' was written for the 1927 Broadway show Funny Face.
Everything in this section was prepared in the usual Jazz Lines Publications manner, using original scores and/or parts from the historic recording sessions.

Other Recent Noteworthy New Music
The Music of Wayne Shorter as Recorded by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
Here we have the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra arrangements from The Music of Wayne Shorter album. Eight big band arrangements, as well as one that is sax quintet with rhythm that's a perfect way to give the brass a rest. Let's quote Christian McBride's liner notes at length to describe the charts: "Wayne's music has become basic instrumental vocabulary for all of us who came after him. For anyone wishing to play jazz, it is a must that you come through the music of Ellington, Monk, and Shorter. Much of Wayne’s music is architecturally perfect in terms of its harmonic & melodic structure. As creative musicians, we take liberties with interpretations of every legend’s music, while keeping a conscious eye on a song's DNA. The JLCO does a remarkable job of creatively arranging Wayne's music while keeping a watchful eye on the core structure of these songs." Continuing to Publish Count Basie Charts...
2024 has seen us working hard to make more music available from one of the greatest bands in American history, the Count Basie Orchestra. William 'Count' Basie is best known as the face of an organization that for over 50 years played a role in shaping the trajectory of jazz. Does any band swing as easily & as hard as the vintage Basie band? Back a singer like they backed Sinatra & Ella? 2024 has seen new additions to the available Basie canon, from a variety of the brilliant minds who arranged for the band over the years.
The highlight may be 'Corner Pocket.' In many ways, Ernie Wilkins's arrangement of Freddie Green's melody could be considered a prime example of the Basie sound: a simple, riff-based melody, comfortable amounts of room for solos, & a thrilling shout chorus that spans the band’s entire dynamic range. Sammy Nestico's 'Hayburner' has also become one of the band's anthems. New too is Jimmy Mundy's wild, show-stopping take on 'Ol' Man River'. Frank Foster's 'Blue and Sentimental' was released on the 1960 album The Count Basie Story. Although it follows the same format as the 1938 original, it has some subtle deviations that differentiate it. 'Fawncy Meeting You' from Neal Hefti is among the first charts he wrote for the band & shows why they'd work so well together. Newest is Mr. Foster's take on 'Avenue C'. Considered one of the cornerstone performances of the classic era of the band, this arrangement is effectively an updated re-orchestration that closely follows the form of the original. Finally, we have a new set of the six charts we have from the Ella and Basie! record as arranged by Quincy Jones.
Joe Newman Small Group Charts
Joe Newman was a fabulous trumpter, as well as a highly dedicated, multi-faceted jazz ambassador. He recorded & toured with many bands, most famously though with Basie, where over time he made a major mark for himself. Here we have some of his small group session work, available for the first time, just as written by Ernie Wilkins, Manny Albam, and Al Cohn. All of these are very accessible & have fairly standard instrumentation, so we highly recommend checking them out. They also have immense historic & academic value, as they perform the valuable task of distilling the classic Basie sound down to its core essence in a way that expertly balances tight ensemble work with an easy ability to open things up for extended solos. Please click here to view them all, including the new specially-priced set of all five.
