Dear Cathedral Family,
Ahhh, March. The weather is warming and cooling and warming again, and the hearty crocuses are pushing their way through the spring dirt, and the birds know that it is true! Spring is coming, but it’s not here yet. Lent is a journey, and we cannot truly enjoy the fullness of Easter joy and spring weather without real sacrificial penance and sacrifice, as Jesus did in the desert. We also need to endure the snow and ice and cold morning temperatures before we can really embrace the warmth of spring. It has to be a challenge for those who live in warmer climates. See how blessed we are to have the four seasons to guide our liturgical lives!
With a bonus day this year, our February was as full and festive as any I can recall. During Catholic Schools Week/Winterfest, we received the news that we had won the “Best Catholic School” in the country contest! Sponsored by Catholic Concepts and Sock-Religious, our school received more votes than any of the other 900 Catholic Schools nominated. We also received the exciting news that we had won the prestigious Hatchell Cup. The award recognizes the Fighting Irish as the top football team in the country for excellence in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. What a tremendous honor! Congratulations to Coach Bill Peebles '88 and his entire staff. February also saw our Cathedral Show Choirs rolling in weekly competitions, winning several Grand Champion awards for Irish Adrenaline and numerous awards for Adrenaline Rush and our new Middle School Show Choir, Lucky Charms. Marian Bender and her team are sparking greatness in our students!
Last weekend, we held our annual Shamrauction, Rock the Boat, for several hundred attendees who joyfully celebrated the evening in grand style. This program, like no other, truly is an “all hands on deck” event! The volunteers are the success story for this annual event, and June Whitley and Tim Peterson '96 led a team of helpers to make our event shine very brightly! The biggest ovation of the evening was for our Pride of the Irish Drum Line, who showed off their skills to help pump up the excitement. We raised an astounding $902,108! Thank you to all who contributed to ShamrAuction's success. Your generosity will help support the mission of Cathedral High School.
I also want to share that we celebrated Black History Month (with the bonus day!) in new and innovative ways this year. Each day during morning prayer, a student read stories of famous and not-so-famous Black Americans who significantly impacted our country's history. The t-shirts that we have been wearing, stating that “Black History is American History,” ring true to me, as Black Americans' struggle for freedom and equality is highlighted this month. Indeed, we have a way to go, and the words that conclude our daily recitation of The Pledge of Allegiance, “...with liberty and justice for all,” give us a lofty and noble goal. All of our students, armed with the competence to see and the courage to act, hopefully leave Cathedral with the ability to help our country get a bit closer to this goal each and every day.
We end the month of March with Holy Week and the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of our Savior. Please know that we will do all we can to ensure a robust and meaningful Lent for our school family so that we can embrace the full joy of Easter Sunday on March 31. Until then, let us all double down on our prayers, fasting, and almsgiving so that we can share in that joy. Peace and a Good Lent to you!
Faithfully,
Robert Bridges, PhD
President
