RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS & PRESENTATIONS |

Associate Professor Carol Holstead’s article, “In Praise of Open-Note Exams: How allowing students to use their notes during tests can help them build an essential job skill,” was published Sept. 5 in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Her story was also featured in the Chronicle’s Sept. 5 newsletter, Academe Today.
An academic essay by Assistant Professor Judy Watts titled "A journey through communication research on transportation: The future of narrative transportation on emerging forms of media," was recently published in a special issue of "Review of Communication" on the topic of presence. The essay discusses how narratives delivered in augmented and virtual reality formats present unique challenges to conceptualizing and measuring narrative presentation.
Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin published research related to his interests in narrative persuasion and advertising. Conlin and colleagues conducted an experiment to understand persuasive mechanisms and effects of video political ads that ran during the 2018 midterm elections on voter attitudes. Shorter-length supportive ads (compared to longer-length attack ads) were more effective in elevating attitudes about the ads, in addition to the candidates who sponsored them. The study appears as a peer reviewed book chapter in "Narratives in public communication" from Routledge.
Assistant Professor Melissa Greene-Blye has been appointed to the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) DEI Presidential Task Force to examine and explore ways to make AEJMC a more intentionally welcoming space for all, particularly scholars from historically underrepresented groups. The task force will present a report to AEJMC leadership ahead of next year's AEJMC conference in August of 2024.
Assistant Professor Jeff Conlin will present research on behalf of a team comprising of Dean Ann Brill, Associate Dean for Student Success Scott Reinardy and Professor of the Practice Janet Rose at the 39th annual conference of the International Society for the Scientific Study of Subjectivity. The team completed research over the summer that assessed subjective viewpoints toward HPV vaccination and health information sources among young adults in greater Kansas City.
