Cuyler Dunn receives White House Correspondents’ Association Scholarship |

Congratulations to Cuyler Dunn, who was recently chosen to receive the White House Correspondents' Association scholarship. The WHCA scholarship is awarded annually to a JMC School student who excels at media information management. The student winners will have reputations for accuracy in fact-checking and the ability to access databases, government documents and personal sources.
Dunn attended the annual WHCA dinner in Washington D.C., on Saturday, April 26 and was featured at a scholarship luncheon Friday. He has worked for The Eudora Times, The Lawrence Times, Kansas Reflector and Kansas City PBS.

Ad Club connects with agencies: Twenty members of the KU Advertising Club traveled last week to Austin, Texas, to connect with four agencies – Sensis, PREACHER, McGarrah Jessee and Proof Advertising. The companies allowed the JMC students to sit it on a virtual meeting, discussed case studies and shared career insights. Steve Rottinghaus, Ad Club adviser, also joined the group.
Voice of Utah athletics to speak to club on April 30: JMC alum Bill Riley, director of broadcasting and play-by-play voice for the University of Utah, will be the guest virtual speaker at the Sports Media and Society Club meeting at 5 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, at the Clarkson Gallery.

The Digital Marketing Communication, Advertising, and Public Relations concentration hosted several events in April under the “We Are DMC” series. These events promoted dialogue between the DMC faculty and students, addressed current topics and allowed students to learn from and engage with industry professionals. On April 2 and 3, the discussions focused on the importance of audience research for a career in DMC, and the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the classroom, the industry and the users. On April 24, the students engaged with Cal Bruns, CEO & Chief Innovationist, Matchboxology, South Africa, and Marcus Hollinger, Sr. Director of Innovation, Stoked, USA.
JMC School faculty and students highlighted at KAB Awards: Director of Media Crossroads Cal Butcher accepted the Dr. Ian Punnett Media Educator of the Year award from the Kansas Association of Broadcasters at an awards ceremony at Arrowhead Stadium last week. Apply for KAB scholarships: The deadline is May 1 for students to apply for the Kansas Association of Broadcasters and the Kansas Association of Broadcasters Foundation scholarships. The KAB scholarship committee will screen applications to determine who will receive a personal interview and will invite up to 10 applicants for an in-person interview in Topeka in late May. Apply now.
Deadline to apply for $5,000 scholarship is May 2: The deadline for students to apply for the Inez Y. Kaiser scholarship, which celebrates public relations excellence and diversity within the communications field, is May 2. The application portal is open with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation. The $5,000 scholarship will be awarded to a Black college student of junior or senior level who demonstrates the same character and skills as Inez Kaiser.

Professor Hyunjin Seo delivered a talk on her book project focused on community-engaged scholarship with justice-impacted populations at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society Ethical Technology Group on April 15. Her presentation explored community-engaged scholarship as a collaborative approach to addressing digital access and skills gaps among justice-impacted communities. Drawing on her interdisciplinary team’s decade-long collaboration with local organizations and justice-impacted individuals, the project examines both conceptual and practical dimensions of co-designing and implementing digital skills education for currently and formerly incarcerated populations.
Associate Professor Teri Finneman discussed revenue strategies for weekly papers Friday during the Nebraska Press Association convention in Kearney.
Justice Dan Biles of the Kansas Supreme Court was the guest speaker last Wednesday in JMC 408 (Media Law and Ethics) taught by Professor of the Practice Stephen Wolgast. A journalism graduate of Kansas State University, Justice Biles worked as a reporter for The Associated Press in Topeka while attending Washburn University Law School. He explained how judges have to interpret the key words in the First Amendment and took students’ questions about the law and his career.
