Success at the WSMA HOD Meeting

We are pleased to share the outcomes from the recent Washington State Medical Association (WSMA) House of Delegates meeting in Spokane, where the KCMS made a notable impact.

Over the past five months, our Delegate Council has worked to craft resolutions that address key issues for our physician members. We're proud to report that 11 of our resolutions were adopted, and 6 have been referred for further discussion, with titles listed below. We look forward to receiving the final versions from WSMA in the coming weeks.

This success of KCMS resolutions is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our Delegate Council. As we move forward, we will continue to work alongside WSMA, other county medical societies, and our lobbyists to ensure that these resolutions are advanced to the next stage with elected officials. Our commitment remains focused on amplifying the voices of our physician members and driving meaningful progress.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we work together to shape the future of healthcare in Washington.
Sincerely,
Nancy L. Belcher, Ph.D., MPA | CEO King County Medical Society

Seattle Anesthesiologist Inaugurated as President of WSMA

Seattle anesthesiologist John Bramhall, MD, PhD, has been inaugurated as the 2024-2025 president of the WSMA. Dr. Bramhall, who has served at Harborview Medical Center for over 30 years and is a clinical professor emeritus at the University of Washington School of Medicine, brings his extensive experience to this new leadership role.

Having recently stepped down from his position as associate medical director at Harborview, Dr. Bramhall will now lead WSMA. We welcome Dr. Bramhall to this role and KCMS looks forward to working with him to continue advancing healthcare in Washington state.
This announcement is adapted from a news release provided by the WSMA on 10.01.2024

Overview
In the United States, Seattle and Tacoma are two of the leading cities with the highest percentage of individuals identifying as LGBTQIA+. As a nation, the population of individuals identifying as LGBTQIA+ has continued to increase over the last three decades. While many medical school and residency programs have increased their education on LGBTQIA+ issues, many medical professionals have had little, to no exposure to information about critical topics in the care of this population.

This course seeks to provide participants with knowledge on specific aspects of care for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex, and transgender population. Based on previous course feedback, we've expanded the focus on updates in the medical and surgical care of this patient population, particularly on sexual health, cancer screening, and medical history-taking.

This course is appropriate for physicians and advanced practice providers of all clinical disciplines, as well as nurses and other healthcare workers.

Washington’s Climate Commitment Act

The Risk of Repeal

KCMS proudly endorses the "No on 2117 Campaign," joining over 350 organizations opposing I-2117. The I-2117 initiative threatens to dismantle the Cap-and-Invest Climate Commitment Act, which protects public health across WA.

The Cap-and-Invest Act is vital in improving public health by reducing air pollution, which directly lowers rates of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The Act also targets environmental justice by funding improvements in high-risk communities that are disproportionately affected by pollution, helping to reduce health disparities.

By promoting clean energy and supporting infrastructure projects like public transportation and port electrification, the Act decreases our reliance on polluting energy sources and reduces traffic-related air pollution. This transition can help mitigate climate-related health risks, such as heat-related illnesses and the spread of vector-borne diseases.
