Spotlight on Doug Shafer
From easing stress to eliciting a joyful memory, PDX volunteer musicians play an important part in a traveler's experience. Doug Shafer, winner of a PDX People Customer Service Award, gives us his perspective on the impact of music on passengers at the airport, and how performing at PDX influenced his craft. In his words, "If the person providing the music is having fun, that sort of lightness and that sort of attitude transfers along with your music." Watch Doug's spotlight video.

Hamlin Cardiac Arrest Drives Interest in CPR/AED Classes
Last week, Damar Hamlin, a safety for the Buffalo Bills, collapsed on the field after tackling an opposing player during a nationally televised football game. As millions watched on TV, commentators explained that Hamlin was receiving CPR and an AED had been used for on-scene care. This scary scenario serves as a reminder of the vital importance of knowing CPR and how to use an AED, skills that our Portland Airport Fire and Rescue team teaches for free right here at PDX. While the next two classes filled up fast, take a moment to bookmark the PDX Lifesavers page and keep an eye on the PDX People calendar as more classes are scheduled.

Wear Blue to Raise Awareness about Human Trafficking
This Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Port of Portland Public Safety and Security team is participating in #WearBlueDay to help raise awareness about the millions of men, women and children around the world who are taken and held against their will and coerced into sexual slavery or forced labor. As the campaign notes, human trafficking is a borderless crime which respects no race, color or religion. If you'd like to join your fellow PDX People, participation is simple – just wear something blue and post a picture on social media using the #WearBlueDay hashtag. For more information on recognizing the indicators of human trafficking, head to the Blue Campaign website.

Plan Now for MLK Weekend Volunteer Opportunities
United Way and Hands On Greater Portland are no longer hosting the MLK Weekend of Service and are instead highlighting community events that celebrate and address racial equity. They're sharing great volunteer opportunities that support community organizations as they honor Dr. King’s legacy. Whether you want to help SOLVE with cleanup projects or make care kits for the houseless, there's a way to get involved and give back. Or, if you're interested in gaining new knowledge, check out University of Portland's “MLK Day On” or Portland State University's “Living the Legacy” series of virtual campus and community events.

PDX in Pictures
Did you know PDX has a dedicated team of airport operations specialists? They work for the Port of Portland and are assigned to either airfield or landside and if you work at the airport, odds are you've met some of these folks. Pictured above are Haley Verbrigghe and Z’ev Jenerik, members of the landside group.
Z'ev shares, "I love working as an airport operations specialist. Aside from the sense of accomplishment gained through helping people and fixing problems behind the scenes with the many talented people who work here, I get to actively navigate the labyrinthine halls, corridors and tunnels that make up the airport and interact with all manner of individuals every day. Each shift brings something different, new and exciting!"
