Friday Update |
|
|
Good afternoon, colleagues. Here is the biweekly update from Academic Affairs.
This is a very busy time for all of us, but particularly for instructors, who have end-of-semester assignments and exams to grade. I particularly want to express my appreciation to the many, many instructors who go above and beyond for student learning at UWM. You are excellent role models for all instructors, including new graduate teaching assistants.
I am also appreciative of staff members who provide support to our students—the end of the term can be a stressful time for them, and your dedication to student well-being is very evident. Every interaction can be an opportunity to have a positive impact on a student, demonstrating that UWM is a caring campus.
As we head into winter break, I hope you can take some time to relax and deepen connections with those you hold dear in your life. I also hope that you will think about your goals for the spring semester, whether they relate to teaching and learning, research, student support, or university service. Our individual work is carried out in the larger context of UWM and the communities we serve. We are part of the Universities of Wisconsin system, and we operate within higher education as a societal sector. With that in mind, I encourage you to explore how your work connects to this larger framework and to recognize that the pace of change is accelerating throughout higher education.
As I reflect on my six and a half months at UWM, I believe this is an exciting time to be here because this is a time of and for transformational change. Even though there have been some challenging and unexpected decisions that we’ve had to contend with, we can amplify our agency by realizing that change is not merely a choice, it is an imperative for progress and growth. In a world that is constantly evolving, remaining stagnant and resistant to change is no longer a viable option. It is through transformational change—new ways of thinking about curricula, teaching and learning practices, research opportunities, university operations, and new, enabling technologies—that we can unleash the full potential of individuals, organizations, and societies, propelling them toward greatness. I wish you all the best for this holiday season.

Every day, we witness random acts of kindness by our students and colleagues that really embody the UWM Mission. I encourage you to call each other out for the good work you do. Humility may be a virtue, but the camaraderie and Panther spirit I see on campus is so uplifting, and I hope you can be just as proud of yourselves as I am of you!

Emerit Professor Rolf Hickman passed away on November 24. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA nearly 100 years ago. Rolf was intrigued by live theatre and performed on national radio shows such as Art Linkletter’s, “House Party,” and “Coast to Coast on a Bus,” with Milton Cross as the bus driver. Unfortunately, his promising theatrical career was cut short due to debilitating arthritis. Rolf’s expansive education included the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the University of Arizona at Tucson, Ozenfant School of Fine Arts in New York City, University of Pittsburgh, Syracuse University, and the Pennsylvania State University. Rolf arrived at UWM sometime in the 1950s and he stayed for 35 years, teaching art and art education, chairing the Fine Arts (now Art & Design) Department, and giving the 1985 Fromkin Lecture, which was published by The University of Wisconsin Press. After retirement, he was appointed Visiting Scholar at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. I share my condolences with Rolf’s family and the many others whose lives he touched. For additional information, please see Rolf’s obituary. There will be no memorial service.

I share sad news from the College of General Studies:
Associate Professor Margaret Hankenson passed away on November 26. She was born in Harvey, Illinois on December 15, 1964. Margaret earned a BFA in Theatre from Illinois Wesleyan University and an MA and PhD in Political Science from Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana. In 1999, she became an assistant professor of Political Science at UW-Waukesha, which later merged with UWM to become UWM at Waukesha. She was promoted to associate professor in 2004. Margaret was committed to her campus, serving as department chair for many years, a faculty senator, and an early proponent of the Faculty and Student Research Symposium. Later in her career, she was an advocate for the accessibility of online classes, serving as the campus coordinator of online programming. Margaret was a lifelong baseball fan, switching loyalties from the Cubs to the Brewers when she moved to Milwaukee; an avid gardener; always curious; and loved a good conversation. I share my condolences with Margaret’s family and the many others whose lives she touched. For additional information, please see Margaret’s obituary. Her memorial will be held on January 20.
