From the Top features the astounding performances and captivating personal stories of classically trained young musicians from across the country.
Each one-hour broadcast presents five to six top-notch performances along with interviews with host Peter Dugan.
Featured performers hail from across the United States and range in age from 8 to 18. They share their exceptional artistry and unique perspectives on the world, offering listeners a fascinating glimpse into the lives of these talented tweens and teens.
"As a host I’m trying to draw on my love of musical collaboration in the way that I get to know the young musicians." says host Peter Dugan. "In our interviews, we give space for young people to tell their stories the way they want to tell them."
Regularly appearing co-hosts and guest hosts, including violinist Tessa Lark, clarinetist Alex Laing, pianist Orli Shaham and violinist Charles Yang, widen the musical perspective of the program both in performance and conversation.
From the Top was launched as a radio experiment in 2000 and has become the leading national media platform for today's young classically trained musicians, with a roster of alumni artists who are making waves in classical music and beyond.
Behind the scenes, From the Top is a learning and media lab for young musicians. Every young person heard on the program is part of an educational fellowship program that offers young musicians the tools and validation they need to become well-rounded artists in today's world. This includes building skills in recording, media and technology, community engagement, and storytelling and communication.
“As proof that classical music in America is alive and kicking, I’d like to direct those perennial naysayers to From the Top. The program is a potent antidote to any gloom-and-doom doubter,” says Tom Huizenga of NPR Music. “From the Top has built an impressive platform to celebrate the music, lives, and stories of youngsters playing classical music. That’s right. Young people in this country love classical music.”
