Getting through difficult things takes tenacity—showing up, earnestly giving it your best, day after day. Searching for an internship, co-op, or job can be exhausting, and after awhile, it's common to feel fatigue setting in.
Have job boards and job postings not delivered the results you were looking for? Did you know that more than 80 percent of all jobs are not found on a job search board?
|
Do you know about the “hidden” job market? |
Forbes Job Search Strategist Hannah Morgan said, “Historically, the hidden job market was about unadvertised jobs. Fast forward to the digital age, and you’ll find that the process is still about getting to hiring managers and recruiters early in the process, ideally, before the job is posted or engaging with that employer as soon as a listing goes up.”
|
Secrets for finding opportunities: |
During the job search, some employers don’t list all their open positions publicly. Instead, employers rely on internal candidates or use recruiters to seek well-qualified individuals. Using your professional connections and networking abilities can help you tap into this hidden job market!

Social Media Research and Networking. |
Many employers have social media profiles, so follow or connect with those that interest you most. Use them to identify key employees within the company and build connections with these figures by engaging with their content regularly and respectfully, providing unique insights when possible to show your industry knowledge. If you can develop a rapport with these figures, you can reach out to them to express your interest and ask for an informational interview.
Remember to keep your social media profiles up-to-date with your current or most recent job responsibilities, accomplishments, and skills. Stay active by joining and taking part in online groups related to your industry, along with posting original, relevant content on your profile.
These tactics can help you stand out within your professional community and build your network. When your connections see your activity and demonstrable expertise, it can help you make an impression that could lead to potential opportunities.
|
Rather than waiting for a job to open up at your dream company, show initiative by reaching out directly. When possible, use existing connections to point you toward the right hiring manager or do research to find them. Make contact with an email, letter of interest, or cold call. If you notice they are active on social media, you can even send them a private message to start a conversation.
|
Participate in Professional Groups, Conferences, and Activities. |
Pay attention to events and organizations related to your industry or profession. For example, communication or advertising and public relations majors might benefit from connecting with the Rochester PRSA or the American Advertising Federation.
Oftentimes, employers reach out to associations with job postings before posting more broadly and publicly. Plus, participation in professional associations can build your network with industry peers or alumni who work for your desired companies. These relationships can be helpful sources of advice for your search and potentially connect you to hidden opportunities.
Conferences or trade shows are opportunities to meet industry peers and decision-makers. Research the companies and attendees and set goals for yourself to focus your networking. When you plan the connections you want to make, it can help you use your time at the conference more efficiently. It can also help you plan out your conversation or elevator pitch to leave a memorable impression.
