Hofstra University is proud to highlight the Center for Civic Engagement’s 5th Annual Banquet, an evening dedicated to celebrating collaboration, leadership, and the meaningful impact made possible when government, community organizations, and higher education work together.

 

This year CCE recognizes musician, educator, and public advocate Shoshana Hershkowitz for her community service and commitment to constructive dialogue. Since its inception, CCE has connected students with public service opportunities, fostered necessary dialogue across sectors, and supported initiatives that advance the public good. The Center’s milestone event, to be held April 30, 2026, will recognize university partners, showcase student achievement, and reaffirm our collective investment in building stronger, more resilient communities.

Hofstra men’s basketball secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship with their 75-69 win over Monmouth in the CAA Championship game on March 10. This is Hofstra’s first appearance in the NCAA tournament since 2001.

The Hofstra men’s basketball program earned top honors in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Conference. Cruz Davis was named Player of the Year, and Preston Edmead secured Rookie of the Year honors. Hofstra is the first school in CAA history, since 1983, to earn the conference Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year accolades in the same season. Read more here.

Hofstra alumni came to campus for the University’s second annual Women in Leadership Symposium, hosted by the Hofstra University Women in Leadership Advisory Board. The half day event consisted of discussions, breakout sessions, and panels featuring successful Hofstra graduates and University leaders exploring paths to building confidence, promoting career growth, and creating work-life balance. Karine Jean-Pierre, former White House press secretary and senior advisor to President Joseph R. Biden Jr., delivered a message of resilience and civic responsibility during her appearance at Hofstra University’s Signature Speaker Series, presented by the Hofstra Cultural Center. Speaking to a packed audience at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, Jean-Pierre drew on personal stories, history, and her experience in the White House to emphasize that hope is not passive and requires participation. The Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation has awarded the Hofstra University Museum of Art a $10,000 grant for its educational program, Art Explorers, a gallery-based art experience currently serving more than 500 students in grades 3 through 5 in the Elmont, Hempstead, and Uniondale School Districts. The primary goal of the Art Explorers program is to provide students with authentic, in-person experiences with original works of visual art – an opportunity that cannot be replicated in the traditional classroom. Guided by trained museum educators, students learn to see appreciatively and reflectively. Read more here.

A new certificate program in international service and collaborative fieldwork at Hofstra University is designed to prepare undergraduate students for careers in humanitarian aid, public service, and global engagement. Peace Corps Prep, housed in the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE), will begin in fall 2026. Hofstra will be the seventh program in New York state to offer the program and the first in Nassau County. Our Unfinished Revolution(s) is an exhibition presented during the U.S. Semi-quincentennial commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with Untold Stories of Revolution: A Hofstra University Initiative for the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution. The Hofstra University Museum of Art will offer visitors an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s history and consider its future by engaging with art that poses questions about the founding document’s historical legacy.

When CB's dog dies from rabies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has gone goth; his ex-girlfriend has recently been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to give him any sort of solace. But a chance-meeting with an artistic kid, the target of this group's bullying, offers CB a peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits. Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that's both haunting and hopeful.
