Thursday, June 23 at 12pm CTThis Drop In Active Learning Session joins facilitator Brandi Howard, Ph.D., Head of Medical and Clinical Affairs at Evofem to discuss understanding and supporting client use of the FDA-approved vaginal pH modulator for contraception, Phexxi®. Dr. Howard will provide clinical information and provide an update on research related to future indications (prevention of chlamydia and gonorrhea). | Relating Reproductive Justice to Clinical Practice

The work of women’s health nurse practitioners (WHNPs) is inextricably tied to reproductive justice. The frameworks of reproductive health, reproductive rights, and reproductive justice can be used to illustrate how policies impact practice and the health and wellbeing of patients. Recommendations for how WHNPs can be more effective advocates for reproductive justice are discussed.
In June of 2021, pop star Britney Spears made headlines when audio of a hearing about her conservatorship was leaked to the media. In her testimony, Ms. Spears said her desire to marry and have a child was being denied because she was being forced to keep an intrauterine device in place even though she wanted it removed. From the Office of Population AffairsNo Surprises Act and Title X RecipientsThe No Surprises Act, issued by the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) went into effect on January 1, 2022. This act aims to end surprise medical billing and help patients understand healthcare costs in advance of their care. For uninsured and self-pay clients (clients who are not covered by public or private insurance), the No Surprises Act requires healthcare providers to give patients a good faith estimate (GFE) ahead of scheduled, non-emergency healthcare services.
The No Surprises Act does apply to Title X and aims to protect the very patient populations that we serve. The primary relevant requirement for Title X is to provide GFE to uninsured and self-pay patients (only). The GFE can reflect the appropriate Title X schedule of discounts for services provided based on income and can be a range rather than a specific dollar amount. No diagnostic codes are necessary.
CMS recognizes that safety-providers, like Title X service providers, have a different set of circumstances and already have protective program regulations in place that make services affordable for their patients. CMS is exploring ways to make compliance for safety-providers less onerous.
CMS wants to hear concrete examples of how implementing the No Surprises Act may be challenging, as well as recommendations to modify guidance that better reflects service delivery.
Send any specific concrete examples of challenges or recommendations to your Project Officer by June 17, 2022. OPA will share this feedback with CMS.
CMS has compiled two documents on frequently asked questions about GFE for uninsured (or self-pay) individuals: FAQ Part One and FAQ Part Two.
