What experiences are resume-worthy? |
With October coming to a close, we’re well into the heart of the semester. We hope that you had an opportunity to check out the career fair and that, with Brick City Weekend upon us, you are getting some time to enjoy the fall.
Although it may feel as though summer 2025 has barely ended, it's already time to plan for summer 2026 and begin the search for internships and full-time roles. But with limited or no prior professional experience, you might be wondering: "What can I highlight on my resume?"
First, carefully review the descriptions for the jobs you're applying for and note the skills and experiences the employer seeks. While you don’t need to meet every qualification, the more you can align your experience with their needs, the stronger your resume will be.
Then, think broadly about the experiences you've had—either during your time at RIT, over summer breaks, or before your RIT days.
Experiences and activities like these can demonstrate your skills and track directly to what employers seek:
|
Class Projects and Academic Work: |
If your coursework or any large project connects to the job you’re applying for, it deserves a place on your resume.
Create an “Academic Projects” section on your resume. This will allow you to highlight research, presentations, labs, design work, or group collaborations that demonstrate different skills, and it creates a way to highlight leadership, collaboration, and teamwork skills.
|
Campus Involvement or Activities: |
Being actively involved on campus, especially in leadership roles, can count toward your work experience. Your involvement in clubs, organizations, and sports teams showcases leadership, teamwork, and organizational abilities. Plus, many campus activities or teams support charitable or community work.
For example, “Planned and organized a campus-wide fundraising event that successfully collected $2,000 for charity” could be an outcome of your campus involvement that earns a place on your resume as a demonstrable skill and experience.
|
Volunteering and Community Engagement: |
Volunteering offers another way to build and showcase relevant skills. It also highlights traits like initiative, responsibility, collaboration, and compassion. Whenever possible, seek opportunities connected to your field of interest, but all meaningful volunteer work is worth including.
