Dear Community Voice Member,
This May, Community Voice is proud to recognize Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and celebrate the contributions, achievements, and diversity of the AANHPI CF community. This celebration aims to highlight the legacy of family, friends, and allies within the AANHPI community and celebrate the diversity within the CF community and Community Voice membership.
May is also CF Awareness Month and we remain dedicated to increasing the visibility, awareness, and amplifying the voices of the CF AANHPI community to inform CF Foundation programs, initiatives, and research. We are committed to hearing from all people with CF and their families.
“I've proudly identified as Asian after Hawaii gave me the context to come to terms with my mixed heritage, but that created a blind spot as we ventured into IVF after my wife's transplant since it was assumed that people of Asian heritage were unlikely to be CF carriers. Sharing our story has helped others avoid our missteps, and why I feel it's so important for the CF community to continue to advocate for ourselves and support each other to make progress. The happy ending to our story is that my CF-post-transplant-wife carried our son - herself - to a full-term pregnancy, and our carrier-only son is now a wonderful, healthy, 8-year-old!”
- Michael Dun, a Community Voice Member
“The only way to amplify our voices and be heard is by sharing our perspectives and experiences with our community. If we aren’t sharing what we go through, no one will know, and nothing will change. We need to hear more voices from the AANHPI population to get a more holistic view of how CF affects us as a group. The only way to make an impact is for all of us to contribute, share, and most importantly listen, so we know where to begin and which direction to go! Community Voice gives us an opportunity to do just that. Please join us in sharing your experiences because we can’t do it alone, but as a collective we can make a huge difference.”
- Sary, Beckett, and Chad Salyer, Community Voice Members
