CAFE Fellows Mid-Year Report

For Faculty, By Faculty

December marked the first six months of the Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE), including a team of ten Faculty Fellows. Each of our Fellows came to their position with a strong sense of purpose and enthusiasm. We are pleased to present a mid-year report that is full of progress and plans for additional outcomes this spring.

Clio: Inspire Students to Research and Write

Asking students to conduct research for a real purpose, write for public audiences and share their findings may motivate them to do their best work in our classes. Now, Clio makes this work feasible for students and instructors.

Hundreds of universities have chronicled their communities in Clio, a website and mobile application that connects thousands of people to nearby history and culture each day. Clio is a non-profit organization based in Kansas City that offers a variety of free programs and tools to help university faculty and students chart individual landmarks, build walking tours and create virtual tours of museums and sites. To date, Clio has more than 39,000 articles and 1,300 trails and walking tours that users can access with their mobile devices.

Instructors in diverse disciplines can adapt Clio to serve the content of their classes. For example, a biology professor could ask students to map local sites for wildlife observation, a civil engineering professor could assign students to plot bridges and an art historian could require students to catalog public art. For more information, read a report about a Boston University professor’s use of Clio.

To learn how to incorporate Clio into your curriculum, join Dr. David J. Trowbridge on Friday, March 11, 2022 from 1-2 p.m.via Zoom. Register for this event below. Dr. Trowbridge is the developer of Clio and an associate research professor of digital and public humanities in the Department of History at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Click to access a detailed overview of Clio.

This event is open to all instructors at UMKC and area institutions and is sponsored by the UMKC Center for Faculty Excellence (CAFE).  For more information, contact Henrietta Rix Wood, the CAFE Faculty Fellow for Teaching Writing, at woodhr@umkc.edu.

Summer Faculty Success Program
UMKC has an institutional membership to the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD).  This summer, the NCFDD will host a virtual bootcamp for faculty in which faculty work directly with a coach and a small group of other faculty to implement skills and strategies to maximize their success. The program is for tenure-track and tenured faculty looking for coaching and peer support to propel both research productivity and work-life balance to new levels.

UMKC will provide three scholarships to cover the cost of the program. This year, priority consideration will be given to mid-career faculty.

Information about NCFDD and how to register for this organization can be found on the UM System page for NCFDD.

Interview with CAFE Fellow Dr. Arif Ahmed

1) Why did you want to be a CAFE fellow? What are you excited about?

I was intrigued by the concept of CAFE when it was first announced and the idea that faculty could design and lead programs that would then support other faculty at UMKC. I believe that my project, Department Chair Development, can enhance faculty excellence.  I am excited to use my expertise in leadership development and my experience as a department chair to develop a program that will fill a major void: providing a forum for UMKC department chairs to hone their skills while forming a community of peers.

Interview with CAFE Fellow Dr. Hadara Bar-Nadav

1) Why did you want to be a CAFÉ fellow?  What are you excited about?

I looked forward to joining a cohort of faculty who were committed to working together to  support faculty excellence across the University.  My overarching goal is to promote faculty and staff research in the Faculty Affairs Newsletter and on the CAFE website.  Our faculty and staff have published books with major presses; published articles and creative works in the top journals in their fields; won grants worth more than $52 million dollars since July 2021; received international awards; and excelled in every area.  I want to share these accomplishments within the UMKC community and beyond.

2) What do you hope to accomplish this year?  Are there any particular goals?  What do you think the legacy of your work will be?

This year, I created an Awards Calendar, which is posted on the CAFE website.  This calendar includes listings of University award opportunities available to our faculty at the department, unit, Dean, Provost, Trustee, and System level.  This has helped inform our faculty of the many awards available and has increased applications to these awards.  In addition, I have succeeded through  FAN and CAFE website to promote faculty and staff research and share that information broadly.

3) How does your research or role as faculty member inform your interest and work as a Café fellow?

I’m a creative writer, and write poetry and non-fiction, as well as scholarly work. I could easily argue that creative writing is a celebration of language, sensation, and lived experience. My work for CAFE allows me to turn this celebratory literary gaze on our faculty and staff who are truly doing amazing things.
