Lourdes Tapia Farias with Volaris was nominated by a PDX traveler.
"Last year was tough, and I moved myself and my three kids back to California with my parents.
I was flying to Los Angeles, but after some transportation struggles, we ended up missing our flight. The airline rebooked us, but I had no money and our flight was not until the next morning.
I think the whole airport heard my kids screaming and crying. They were tired, hungry, and I was stuck.
A worker walked up and asked if I needed to use her phone or if she could help in any way. I said no. I was

so embarrassed. My kids kept saying they were hungry, and without asking any more questions, she went and bought meals at Burgerville and brought them to us.
I told her I didn’t have any money, and she said that it was ok. She brought me juice and chips, let me know where I could find her, and gave me her number in case we needed anything.
I am so beyond grateful for this person. I will forever cherish this moment. Thank you for helping me and my kids when I was vulnerable."

Be Knowledgeable:
Mobility Assistance at PDX |
| |
For travelers who use a wheelchair, air travel often requires extra planning, and much of that coordination happens through their airline. But creating an accessible experience at PDX is a shared effort. Whether a traveler uses a wheelchair every day or needs assistance getting through the airport, there are resources available to help make their journey more comfortable.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
|
|
| |
|
- Travelers who need wheelchair assistance should arrange it with their airline. But, if someone realizes they need assistance once they're at the airport, you can help them contact wheelchair service at 503-460-4300.
-
Restrooms and drinking fountains throughout PDX are wheelchair accessible.
- Spacious single-stall, all-user restrooms are available pre-security, throughout the concourses, and in the Rental Car Center.
- Airport parking buses are accessible and equipped with ramps.
- Accessible parking spaces are available in all parking garages and lots.
- Discounted parking rates are available for people with disabilities in most lots.

| It's National Safety Month, the perfect time to remind you of the safety programs in place at PDX.
The airport's Safety Management System (SMS) is a proactive and organized way to manage safety risks in the air operations area (AOA). It helps identify potential hazards, assess and reduce risks, and continuously improve overall safety.
|
|
|
|
The first step in the SMS is identifying a hazard, concern, or planned change. It's simple, anonymous and just a click away at go.pdx.com/SMS-Report.
HAWKS (Helping Airport Workers Know Security) is an airport-wide program that creates a more secure environment for everyone at PDX by enlisting the support of all badgeholders as an extra layer of security to observe and report suspicious activity.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom or Emancipation Day, marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
|
|
|
|
This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation (which was not enforceable in areas under Confederate control) and symbolized the long and arduous journey toward true freedom and equality.
Juneteenth is not just a day of remembrance, but a celebration of culture, heritage, and progress. It is a time to honor the achievements and contributions of African Americans throughout history, and to acknowledge the work that remains in building a society where liberty and justice are truly for all.
Read more about Juneteenth, learn about Oregon’s own Mother of Juneteenth, Ms. Clara Mae Peoples, and see how the community is honoring the day.
