Graduate Student Spotlight: Grace Sarabia
Space is defined as the unlimited expanse in which all material objects are located, and all events occur. Artists and designers often explore the concept of space by creating something special and unique where people feel that they belong. Nuveen M. Barwari, graduate student in the School of Art, is using her work to create an entirely new space—one that allows her to connect her homeland and her host land.

TCE Part of $25M Nuclear Research and Development Project
The Department of Nuclear Engineering is part of an 11-member university consortium grant for research and development into nuclear science, engineering, and security. The consortium, which also includes five national laboratories, aims to send more PhD graduates to those labs while addressing important questions in fundamental and applied nuclear science. The $25 million grant is funded by the US Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration.

UT has been named a 2020–21 Fulbright US Student top-producing institution. With 17 students and recent graduates offered Fulbrights for 2020–21, UT ranks seventh among all public research universities and is the top-ranked SEC school for the third straight year. Competition for the 2022–23 awards will launch later this spring.

The College of Nursing and Tickle College of Engineering have been awarded a research subcontract of up to three-years and $1.5 million to build advanced systems engineering and operations for high-consequence situations in which critical decisions must be made quickly and correctly.

The Substance Misuse Community of Scholars (CoS) was started to lead efforts that mitigate the consequences of the opioid crisis and substance misuse issues in Tennessee. On March 18, the CoS is hosting a Virtual Summit to provide faculty and staff the opportunity to discuss substance misuse research and projects.

The Science Alliance has announced a call for proposals for the Support for Affiliated Research Teams (StART) award. Those interested can apply via InfoReady starting Monday, March 22. The deadline for submissions is May 3, 2021. Typical awards are $100K and each team must include principal investigators from both UT and ORNL researchers.
