Meet Demian Lucas
Demian Theresa Lucas graduated from Portland State in 2019 with her Master of Science degree in communication. She currently works as Vice President of Talent at a non-profit education advocacy organization called Stand for Children. When she was a student at PSU, she was a member of the Student Fee Committee, which helped prepare her for serving on the Multnomah County Citizen Advisory Board. Additionally, she was a graduate teaching assistant in the Communication department and Multicultural Retention Student Services, which she says was the most rewarding experience during her time at PSU. Demian’s strongest recommendation to current students and alumni is “network, network, network! You can find me on LinkedIn.com and I would love to connect with you there."

We have been watching a lot of basketball in my house during the pandemic. One of the statistics used in basketball (and other teams sports) is the "plus/minus rating" for individual players. The plus/minus rating is used to assess a player's impact on the game, by measuring the difference between the team's total scoring and their opponent's scoring when the player is in the game. I find this concept really useful. While our culture often emphasizes individual success, our most important work is often done in teams, relying on our collective wisdom to achieve our shared common goal: supporting our students so they thrive and succeed. As part of performance evaluation season, I wish there was a plus/minus category. Does this person make all the people around them better? Are they the secret ingredient that makes the whole team achieve higher levels of greatness together?
