Preseason Basketball Memo - 10/13/23

The beginning of the 2023-34 girls basketball season is under a month away!!  Hopefully the beginning of the season will go great for all of you!  The following information will hopefully remind or inform the coaches and athletic administrators of some of the important details related to the upcoming girl’s basketball season.

1.     Be sure the head girl’s basketball coach has viewed the basketball rules meeting by the first competition. The basketball online rules meeting is located on your Bound account under the basketball heading. The rules meetings will be live on Monday, October 23, 2023.

2.     With the change in rule related to fouls per quarter and reset of the fouls at the start of the next quarter, a new basketball scoresheet is required.  You have two options for basketball scoresheets – you can either download them from the IGHSAU website – go to Coaches and administrator’s tab, then basketball, then download the scoresheet OR you can request the IGHSAU to mail you 100 scoresheets at a cost of $5.00 plus shipping.  Please email Gary Ross if you would like to purchase the scoresheets. In addition, if you need scorebook covers, you also may order by emailing Gary. The cost is $8.00 per scorebook cover including 20 scoresheets plus postage.  The new basketball scoresheets will fit in the old scorebook covers.
3.     Please enter rosters and schedules into Bound.  A reminder that Quikstats-Bound must be updated weekly by noon on Tuesday throughout the season – 1st check is on Tuesday, November 28, 2023.
4.     Coaches, please complete the 2023-2024 prospectus by clicking here. Email your prospectus to Jason Eslinger. Jason would like your prospectus by November 10.
5.     The pre-season rankings for all five classes will be posted by Friday, November 17.
6.     The preliminary classification for girls basketball has been posted on the IGHSAU website. You can download the latest list by clicking here.  Please double-check and let me know if there are any changes by Friday, November 10.    We will post the Final Classification by Monday, November 13. If you are in a cooperative sharing agreement, please be sure that that agreement is listed in the classification.
7.     If you have a Foreign Exchange Student who is planning on participating in basketball, be sure to complete the Foreign Exchange Student Application Form, which can be downloaded by clicking here. Please email your form to Gary Ross as soon as possible.
8.     Chuck Brittain is serving as the IGHSAU Coordinator of Officials.  Chuck has arranged for evaluators throughout the state to observe, give feedback to officials, and provide information to assist Chuck in the assignment of the post-season officials.  If you need to contact Chuck related to officials or basketball rules, please email him by clicking contacting him at chuck@ ighsau.org.
9.     If your school is interested in hosting post-season games, please remember to submit your request to host by clicking on the Site Availability Form in your Bound account under the Basketball heading.
10.   A reminder that you are allowed one jamboree at the varsity level prior to your first game and 3 three additional scrimmages during the season.  If you have been approved to play in an Achieve Challenge game (formerly the Pride Challenge), that would count as one of your three scrimmages.
11.   Please make sure each student is eligible to participate – scholarship rule check (your semester grade from last year or 1st trimester grades from this year) physicals, concussion forms.  If you have a new student in your school, be sure you have completed the Transfer Eligibility Checklist.
12.   Last year, the IGHSAU implemented a “state-wide” pool with HUDL for those schools who already had been using HUDL for film exchange.  The IGHSAU received positive feedback about the “state-wide pool” but not all schools desired to purchase the HUDLfeature.  Schools wishing to use HUDL for film exchange may continue to do so – this aspect is not required to have a state-wide pool though.  If your school is not using HUDL, another form of film exchange must occur with schools – contact the schools and make arrangements for the film exchange.
13.    Shot Clock guidelines and video is posted on the IGHSAU website in the Basketball Coaches and Administrators section of the website.
14.   For non-varsity games in which the host wishes to use a shot clock, the following is the required process:
a.      Contact the visiting team and mutually agree for the shot clock to be used-many conferences will have specific guidelines for non-varsity games.
b.     If mutually agreed, home team will contact the officials to inform them that a shot clock will be used.
c.      Home team will have a shot clock operator for the game with a posted Shot Clock Guidelines on the scoretable.

If you have any questions, please email me at gross@ighsau.org  Have a great season!
