Student support

There is a team of support available to students at KU.

Student Affairs coordinates and develops student support services and programs and serves as an advocate for student needs across the university community that contribute to overall academic success. Student Affairs extends beyond the classroom. Their mission is to engage the KU community in services and programs that make learning possible. 

Academic Success supports the intellectual engagement and pursuit of learning by KU students throughout their academic career, from orientation to graduation and beyond. Using the KU Student Success Model, the units in Academic Success help our community understand how students flow through the university while highlighting key milestones: a student’s initial connection and entry to KU, their progress through a program of study, completion of a credential, and transition to alumni status leading to employment or continuing education.

Who is Phog Allen?

Forrest Clare Allen (or Phog Allen) is known as the "Father of Basketball Coaching." Allen attended KU from 1905 to 1907 where he played basketball for James Naismith (who invented the sport of basketball — you can find the original rules here!). Allen later returned to KU in 1920 as athletic director, football coach, and basketball coach. Known for his "foghorn voice," he eventually earned the nickname of "Phog."

What is AIRE?

KU Analytics, Institutional Research, & Effectiveness (AIRE) provides the University with engaging institutional information to advance strategic aims and promote effectiveness. AIRE supports many KU initiatives by supporting our data ecosystem and uses data and analysis to inform strategic planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement. Faculty Insight is one University initiative for which AIRE administers and provides support. In Faculty Insight, faculty can enter data to capture many activities related to teaching, research/creative works, and service, with some data automatically curated by Academic Analytics and AIRE from University sources.

Save the dates now and learn how to leverage Faculty Insight to promote your work and collaborate with other scholars in our upcoming fall "How to at KU" sessions. We have two sessions to choose from this fall, which take place on Tuesday, October 13 or Tuesday, December 8.

All summer Drop-In and OFA "How to at KU" sessions are virtual and will feature an expert(s) on the topic who is available to answer any questions you might have and help you get started in planning for your fall semester.

Register for New Faculty Orientation by the end of this week!

Our New Faculty Orientation for full-time faculty takes place over two days and serves as an opportunity to hear from campus leaders; learn more about KU’s students; and become acquainted with key units that support teaching and research, provide course design resources, help with grant writing and funding, and foster professional development. Most importantly, New Faculty Orientation will provide you with a chance to connect with each other. 

On Wednesday, August 19, join us for a New Faculty Orientation campus tour. We will have coffee and donuts, and a guided tour to learn more about our beautiful campus.

Faculty Learning Circle: New Faculty Mentor Groups

Keep your connections from New Faculty Orientation and build new ones during New Faculty Mentor Groups. Each mentor group meets over three sessions during the fall semester and provides a space for new faculty to connect and share their experiences in a supportive community setting. Groups are open to any faculty member beginning their career at KU in calendar year 2026. 

Faculty Learning Circle: Academic Productivity - Balancing Time to Get Things Done

Over several sessions throughout the semester, we will explore a productivity framework that supports behaviors that allow us to engage more effectively with our tasks and commitments, create more mental space, and focus on what matters most. Join Dr. Marilu Goodyear, Associate Professor in the School of Public Affairs and Administration and Coach for David Allen's: Getting Things Done, who will facilitate each of the FLC sessions and provide optional coaching sessions that will support you in applying the framework and concepts.
