The ordinance will create five new classifications that don't exist currently in the City of Portland’s classification structure. Classifications are necessary to create the new positions for integration into the budget process and alignment with the council-approved organizational chart.

At Wednesday's city council session for agenda item 1005, Commissioners Ryan and Gonzalez asked the presenters (representatives from the City’s Charter Transition team and the Bureau of Human Resources) for more information relating to the list of job classifications under consideration. As a result, the ordinance status was changed to non-emergency and will be given a second reading at next week’s Dec. 13 council meeting. The ordinance was assigned a new number, agenda item 1041.

Fifteen community organizations and schools welcomed committee members in November for educational presentations; new subcommittees are organizing the work ahead.

The City of Portland Elections Office will host learning sessions for prospective candidates in person and online.

Calling all prospective City of Portland candidates! The City Elections Office is hosting introductory learning sessions in January. 

City Hall renovation begins this winter to accommodate a 12-person council as Portland implements voter-approved changes to city government.

The recent protection and temporary removal of the art installations at City Hall was one of the first steps to prepare the interior for the typical dust and debris brought on by remodeling. The renovation team will soon begin their work to expand council chambers to accommodate 12 new councilors in 2025, as approved by Portland voters in the November 2022 Charter reform.  

Budget planning season begins now for the next fiscal year. The City of Portland’s fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. The budget for FY 2024-25 spans two forms of government.

Now that Portland City Council has approved a new organizational structure for operating the new form of government, a package of investments and funding options is necessary to make it work. These structural decisions were needed to inform the Fiscal Year 2024-2025 budget process, which is already underway.  

In November 2022, Portland voters approved Ballot Measure 26-228 that directs the City of Portland to implement these three connected changes by Jan. 1, 2025:
