Former KU photojournalism student and acclaimed portrait photographer Greg Gorman visited KU Nov. 21 to speak to photography students about his life as a Hollywood photographer. Gorman’s work spans decades, portraying actors, musicians, models and directors. During two years at KU, Gorman enrolled in photojournalism classes and worked in the basement darkroom in Stauffer-Flint Hall. He spoke to dozens of students from JMC 410 and JMC 101, taught by instructor Eric Thomas.

Dan McCarthy named KU employee of the month for September: McCarthy is the assistant director of Jayhawk Academic Advising, and he supports advisors and students across many programs, including the William Allen White School of Journalism & Mass Communications, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and the School of Education & Human Sciences.
McCarthy has been with KU since 2005. As a winner of the Employee of the Month award, McCarthy received a surprise visit from the provost or her designee, a certificate of award, a biography feature in KU Today and a monetary award.

JMC Sports Media Students cover Champions Classic |
More than a handful of JMC School sports media students traveled to Chicago to cover KU basketball’s win over Kentucky in the Champions Classic earlier this month.
Lauren Richey and Lindsay Ryan from Playmakers produced a vlog that features a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to cover the KU basketball team on the road.
Students from the Playmakers, University Daily Kansan and KJHK cover the game with print, audio and video content.

Scholarship deadline is Dec. 15: Undergraduate students - the deadline to apply for School of Journalism and Mass Communications scholarships for the 2024-25 academic year is less than one month away! Last spring, the school offered over $860,000 in scholarships and awards to current and incoming students, and 93% of students who applied received at least one scholarship. All students pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Mass Communications are encouraged to apply.
Apply here (Click the red Sign In button at the top, then log in with your KU online ID and password). You may be asked to complete a general questionnaire before moving to the School of Journalism and Mass Communications Undergraduate Scholarship Application.
The application deadline is December 15, 2023, for current students. The deadline for incoming students is Dec. 1. Recipients will be notified in March 2024.
KU Animators will be hosting its first meeting on Tuesday, November 28, from 4 PM to 5 PM, at Summerfield 401.
The meeting will introduce the mission of the club, discuss animation projects as members, and develop a plan and set the schedule for future meetings next semester. If you are interested in animation in any or all of its forms, join us for our first meeting Tuesday, November 28, to share your thoughts and learn more. Lacy C. Haynes Professor Patricia Gaston is participating in a series that centers around misinformation, disinformation and the wellness of democracy. The upcoming webinar, "Wellness in our Democracy -- Octavia Butler & Democracy in the U.S. in 2023," will also feature Kansas Reflector reporter and JMC alum Allison Kite and Associate Professor of Law Najarian R. Peters.
Associate Professor Hong Vu will give a research talk in a series of research seminars organized by Bournemouth University, United Kingdom. The series invites speakers from universities around the world to discuss their research. Vu’s talk, titled “Automated text analysis: Utilizing big data approaches to understand large amounts of content” will be on Tuesday Nov. 28.
Associate Professor Alyssa Appelman’s co-authored manuscript “Job satisfaction in the COVID-19 era: A survey of copy editors across fields” has been accepted for publication in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly. It has been published online ahead of the print publication.

Report for America virtual info session set for Dec. 4 |
|
|
Report for America will host a virtual informational meeting at 3:30 p.m., Dec. 4, for December 2023 graduates and May 2024 graduates here.
KU alumni are welcome to join the meeting. Report for America is a national service program that places journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered issues and communities. An initiative of the nonprofit media organization, The GroundTruth Project, it is structured to harness the skills and idealism of an emerging group of journalists plus the creative spirit of local news organizations. The deadline to apply to the program is Jan. 31, 2024.

Faculty and staff are invited to join the final Adobe Afternoons at 2 pm this Friday. We will be looking at some ways to integrate Adobe Acrobat into your classroom and professional workflow. Topics include basic PDF creation, using Express to creatively edit PDFs, creating online web forms that automatically collect data for you and adding comments to student work.
