A PhilharMini
featuring Gregg August
Westchester Phil bassist Gregg August lit up the Performing Arts Center stage this past February, with breathtaking solo turns in our “A Sound Vision” concert.

Gregg would have performed this week as part of our annual chamber series presented in collaboration with Downtown Music at Grace, performing his own compositions with a trio. We proudly present these recorded versions here:

Trio for Violin, Piano and Bass, by Gregg August
Todd Reynolds, violin
Vicky Chow, piano
Gregg August, bass
From Gregg August: “My deep interest in Cuban music has led me to visit the island eight times, beginning in 1999. The richness of their music, specifically the folkloric traditions, inspired me both as a bassist and as a composer. The Trio for Violin, Piano and Bass is a cross-disciplinary work, where I integrate some of the melodic chants and complex polyrhythms found in Cuban rumba, and place them in a classical music setting.”
Stand Up With Me, by Gregg August
Gina Cuffari, bassoon and vocals
Tom Cuffari, piano
Gregg August, bass
From Gregg August: “Bassoonist Gina Cuffari, a friend and colleague from the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, revealed to me last year that she was also a singer, and asked if I’d be interested in writing a piece for her where she'd be able to exhibit both skills. The text she had chosen was from a poem entitled The Flag by Pablo Neruda. The power of Neruda’s words seem to resonate aptly for the moment we’re living in.”
