Budgeting for a grant proposal? Equipment threshold is now $10,000 In April 2024, the US Office of Management and Budget (OMB) issued revisions to the "uniform guidance," the set of rules governing federal grants. These updates will be effective for awards made on or after October 1, 2024. One change is the definition of "equipment." Uniform guidance defines equipment as "tangible personal property (including information technology systems) having a useful life of more than one year and a per-unit acquisition cost that equals or exceeds... $10,000." So, if a single item or integrated system costs $10,000 or more per unit, it must be budgeted in the "equipment" category. If the item is less than $10,000, belongs with "materials and supplies." (Previously the threshold was $5000.) Why does this matter? First, OSP and some sponsors require a quote to justify the cost of equipment. Second, the indirect cost rate is not applied to equipment costs. In other words, equipment costs are excluded from the base on which indirect costs are calculated (the "modified total direct costs" or MTDC). When preparing a proposal budget, be sure big-ticket items go in the "equipment" expense line and obtain a quote.

... the free DMP Tool can help craft Data Management Plans
Federal funders like NSF, USDA, and NIH require plans for managing and sharing the data produced by funded research. One aid for creating such plans is the DMP Tool. The DMP Tool is a free, online resource that provides a click-through wizard for creating plans that comply with funder requirements. UNCG is a participating institution, so you can use your UNCG SSO to access the tool. You can collaborate with others to draft a plan, and you share a finished plan with others at UNCG. The wizard can even load DMP templates from particular NSF Directorates or NIH centers. For more info about data management and sharing, UNCG Libraries offers an extensive libguide on Research Data Management. This guide includes a section on creating a data management plan, info about data repositories and archives including NCDOCKS, and quick links to funder data guidelines and other resources.
