| Holiday Greetings from Grad Career Services
During this busy final month of the year, we hope you're able to set aside a few minutes (maybe even several!) to reflect on your career-related goals. What might you do over the break to advance your career pursuits? What does the year ahead look like? Schedule a conversation with a career advisor if we can help you find your path or fine-tune your plans.

FAQ of the Month
How should I respond to those unavoidable career-related questions from family and/or friends?
'Tis the season! Hey, how about a side of intrusive inquiries with your chocolate babka?
Whether it's a question about your dissertation (when will you be finished?) or your future plans (whatever will you do with that masters?), keep the following in mind:
- Why all the questions? As you field inquiries about your career goals, try to remember that most people are coming from a place of genuine interest rather than trying to put you on the spot.
- Honesty is the best policy. You don't have to share everything, but do stick to the facts when it comes to what you DO want to share. For example, "Thanks for asking about my job search, Aunt Margie. I have good leads in XYZ area of interest. I'll be sure to give you a heads up when I make an official decision." OR "Funny you should ask; I'm hoping to get into ABC field and I think your best friend works in that area. Any chance you could introduce us so I could ask him/her for some advice?"
- Rehearse your answer. If you know you're likely to get a certain question over and over, practice what you want to say and stick to it.
- Nothing wrong with a little deflection! If you feel uncomfortable, change the subject or simply remove yourself from the situation. "Geez, Aunt Margie, your drink looks low; can I get you a refill?"
