[from the vpsa]Having spent the better part of my career in higher education trying to discover the secret sauce for student success, the Chronicle piece Have We Gotten Student Success Completely Backward? caused me to pause. Citing data from the Gallup-Purdue Index, the author Aaron Basko suggests that the solution to improving student's sense of belonging, and ultimately boosting their success, is not that complicated. Instead, he argues, it is radically simple: students need to feel like someone has their back and they need a chance to do something really meaningful to them at least once a week. Basko candidly writes, "Instead of fretting over why their students might leave, colleges need to make sure each one has a good reason to stay." While I'm still working out whether Basko's points represent a massive oversimplification or profound insight, at a minimum, his piece serves as a helpful reminder to not miss the forest for the trees.
