Notes from the HR Summit in Las Vegas
from Isaac Dixon

I had the honor of being a part of the HR Summit that took place in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was attended by over 150 people. While many were from private industry, there were also HR professionals from colleges and universities. The discussion focused on the need for HR people to be seen as real strategic partners in our organizations. My presentation was on the need for HR organizations to be able to quantify more of the work that we do. I also discussed how that data could help our organizations in making decisions that impact people.

A panel discussion tied directly to HR strategy. It was led by three CEOs who had all been HR leaders. They talked about the perception in most organizations that all HR cares about is compliance-related activities. They discussed ways in which HR can change this perception. One of the key pieces of advice was understanding the work that our stakeholders do, and the world that they live in.

By understanding their priorities, as well as their pain points, we can design better solutions to help them solve their problems. HR gains value and credibility with them when we can work in this space alongside our clients.

One key takeaway: No matter what size or sector of the economy the organizations were from, the HR-related challenges and opportunities looked very similar.

Using Supplemental Questions to Screen Applicants in PeopleAdmin
Did you know that you can review and download the responses to Supplemental Questions (also known as screening questions) in order to screen candidates? Note that graphic and downloadable screen question reports will only display responses for active applicants.
To review Screening Questions, navigate to the Applicants Tab in the posting and select Actions > Review Screening Question Answers.
PeopleAdmin will display the responses and percentages for each screening question with pre-defined answers.
To view the applicants that gave a particular answer, click the link contained in the response.
On the Actions dropdown, you can bulk-move selected applications in the workflow, or send an e-mail from the Application template library.

Job Classification Matrix

We have created a Job Classification Matrix to assist with costing out different position types across campus. Remember that OPE rates are approximates. This document can also be found on the Policies, Contracts, and Forms section of the HR website.
