JANUARY 7, 2021

Changes to Spring Semester Calendar

We will resume online classes on Monday, January 11 with Announcements at 8:45 a.m.
While our intention is to return to in-person classes as soon as it is prudent, we are extending online classes for at least one week. Our intention is to return to in-person classes on Monday, January 25. All students will be tested before we resume in-person instruction.
Boarding students who are not currently in-residence may return on Sunday, January 17, one week later than previously scheduled. A small number of exceptions have been made for those needing to return on January 10. All returning boarding students must provide proof of a negative COVID test taken within 96 hours of return and will quarantine and retest on campus. If you have not yet done so, ALL BOARDING FAMILIES must complete this form.
For more information, see Mr. Sjolund's Monday email or our COVID Protocols & FAQs website
The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

SAS online but in-session half day

New families are sometimes surprised to learn that SAS is in session on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Each year, we dedicate this day to lessons, lectures, and worship focused on the legacy of Dr. King. While we will not be in-person this year, we will be carrying on this tradition with a half day of programming that honors the life and legacy of Dr. King. We will have more information in next week's SASAFACTS but are pleased to note that because of our online presence this year, we plan to offer some events to a broader audience, including our students' families. We will conclude by noon and will be encouraging our students to engage in self-directed service, learning, and/or reflection in the afternoon.

Unto Us a Child is Born.

Two, Actually!

We are delighted to welcome two new members to the SAS family!
Chaplain Molly Short and Outdoor Education & Place-Based Learning Coordinator and Humanities teacher Michael Short welcomed Kilian Bruce Short on December 18.
Patton Rogers Thomas was born to our Spanish teacher Stephen Thomas and his wife on December 30.
Mother Short and Señor Thomas will both be on family leave for the third quarter. The Rev. Guilianna Gray, Walter Reid '10, and Courtnay Zeitler will be covering their responsibilities.

College Acceptances

Twenty-nine of the 34 members of the Class of 2021 have applied to college already, submitting a total of 162 applications and receiving 48 acceptances to-date, including early decision admissions to Brandeis University for Emily Ren and the University of Rochester for Tony Yu. More than two-thirds of the class has already received at least one offer of admission. See a full list of colleges that have already given this year's seniors the nod. (And, if your child's acceptance isn't listed, please encourage them to pass along the good news to Mr. Monahan.)

Employment Opportunities

Help us spread the word.

SAS is currently accepting applications for the 2021-2022 school year in Chemistry and Art, as well as a Librarian to begin this year. See Employment for more information.

Your Questions Answered

For our second semester, we are expanding what was the COVID-19 Q&A section to a general space for sharing recent questions we have received that may be of interest to our greater community. SAS COVID-19 information, including the 4-county case rate, remains available on our website.

Will day students be required to quarantine and test before returning to in-person classes?

Yes. Day students are expected to limit their contacts to family members for two weeks prior to the return to in-person classes. They will be tested at SAS during the week of January 18. The testing schedule will be communicated in the coming days.

What is the schedule for COVID testing this semester?

With rapid tests in stock on campus (thanks to the State of Tennessee) and a local lab now available (thanks to the University of the South), we will be able to test the majority of students each week, with testing available Monday-Thursday.

When will school start NEXT year?

We are currently working on the calendar for the coming year and have set many of the major dates. These can be found on the SAS calendar. Classes will begin for the 2021-2022 academic year on Monday, August 16, 2021
