Every summer we have a charity poker run here in the 1000 Islands. It drives a lot of the locals crazy.
All these high-performance boats come racing down the St. Lawrence River, and the roar of the engines can be deafening.
It’s been going on for years.
THE RESULTS WERE DEAD QUIET
UNTIL THIS YEAR!
Naturally, people in their kayaks and local fishermen don’t particularly like it. Neither do some of the old cottage owners when their windows start rattling as the boats roar past.
Oddly enough, most of the people I talked to had no idea what they meant when they called it a "charity poker run". Actually, I didn’t either.
I figured they probably passed a cup around at the end while everybody was drinking beer and having a cookout.
Then, for the first time, I saw the actual results on the evening news on Channel 7. I was stunned.
So was everyone else I told about it.
They raised $457,000.
Are you kidding me? In a little resort area like the 1000 Islands?
Then they explained where the money went.
Half of it goes every year to Make-A-Wish kids. But it doesn’t stop there. They invite the kids and their families to the event, and some of the kids - including children in wheelchairs - even get to go out for rides in the boats, at much lower speeds, of course.
The rest of the money goes right back into the local communities.
It helps support first responders in the surrounding towns. It helps stock local food pantries. And they even set aside money for our local community hospital.
Suddenly, all that noise sounded a little different.
Miracles happen every day,
and this event was certainly one of them.

It’s a reminder of just how fortunate we are to live in the USA.
Labor Day is supposed to be a celebration of the American worker, but for most of us, working didn’t stop at 40 hours a week.

You’ve built a business or a career, raised a family, taken care of your friends, your employees, and coworkers, and probably spent a good part of your life worrying about everybody else.

For many of us, that’s what boating has always been about.
It’s not really about the boat. It’s about where the boat takes you, the people you have aboard, and the memories you make together.
And maybe, after all those years of working and taking care of everyone else, it’s okay to do something simply because you want to.
So when you come to the boat show this fall and find yourself looking at that yacht you really like, remember this quote:
