The Divorce Dilemma arrived in Africa in July-August. The book is the first of its kind for Africa. The co-authors note, "Christians in Africa would rather not talk about divorce. Divorce is a controversial subject and almost taboo in our context."
Many good people have been wounded by spouses they loved, only to be further wounded by their communities and churches. Is “God hates divorce” really all we have to say to them? In the book, they highlight Christine's story, who felt betrayed by the church.
"Within a month of their children going off to college, their relationship was in deep crisis. The couple went to their pastor. After listening to each one separately, the pastor decided to counsel them together. Things went from bad to worse as Christine's husband had turned violent. She continued to work with their pastor to try to reconcile the relationship, but after a year the couple filed for a divorce. A few years later, Christine said, 'My pastor failed me. He ganged up with my husband and believed everything that he said. Yet, I was the one he knew, having grown up and served in his church for many years.' She was devastated that the church had deserted her in her moment of greatest need."

"Divorce has become a reality even among Bible-believing Christians. To deal effectively with rising divorce rates, one has to examine the socio-cultural context of marriage, gender-related issues, and the influence of media and globalization. The authors’ research seeks to educate and to prevent divorce. They also teach couples necessary coping skills for conflict resolution communication. Those already divorced can find help to pick up the pieces. African pastors, teachers, and counsellors will find the book very useful. I heartily recommend it."
