Greetings,
As the we enter the season of giving and gratitude, Hofstra University is grateful for the community partnerships that support the campus and the surrounding neighborhoods. Under the leadership of Anita Ellis, the Office of Commuting Student Services and Community Outreach continues to build meaningful connections between students, residents, and local organizations. This fall, Hofstra students volunteered to clean Jones Beach, supported a food pantry in Hempstead, visited a local farm in Malverne, and more.
Next week, the office will host its annual Shake-a-Rake event, in which students rake the leaves and clean yards for community members living in the surrounding area. This annual event began in 2010 and has grown to include more than 500 volunteers assisting more than 50 households in raking leaves each year. To learn more about the annual programming the office hosts, go here.
To get connected and learn more about community partnership opportunities, contact communityaffairs@hofstra.edu.
Sincerely,
Chanda Washington
Associate to the President for Government and Community Affairs

Hofstra students volunteered at The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) in Hempstead, working to fight food insecurity in the local community. This year’s class gift was used to sponsor two meals at the Mary Brennan Inn Soup Kitchen- one on September 12, 2025 (543 meals served) and one on September 19, 2025 (719 meals served). Now in its second year, this service opportunity helps students understand the history and values behind the organization, as Hofstra sponsors meals on behalf of the incoming Class of 2029.
