Dear Jumbos,
Welcome to Tufts! My name is Amma Agyei, and I am so honored to be serving as your Student Body President. I still remember my freshman year like it was yesterday. I came into Tufts thinking I was going to major in Biology, go to medical school and become a surgeon. Yet here I am four years later majoring in Biomedical Engineering and on my way to Tufts Graduate School for Mechanical Engineering. The point I am trying to make is, there are endless opportunities at Tufts, and it is okay to be uncertain about what you want to do.
As a Tufts undergraduate student, you are a member of the Tufts Community Union (TCU). If you are interested in creating change at Tufts, you should consider getting involved in student government. TCU is composed of TCU Senate, TCU Judiciary, and the Committee on Student Life (CSL).
- TCU Senate is tasked with allocating money to student organizations, representing student voices and working with administrators to improve student life.
- TCU Judiciary oversees the recognition of student organizations and ensures they adhere to their constitutions.
- The CSL collaborates with administration and faculty for policy decisions and judicial action.
Consider joining the Tufts University Social Collective (TUSC) if you are interested in planning major campus events such as Spring Fling, Tuftonia’s Day, and Winter Ball. Again, Tufts has more than 300 student organizations including club sports, cultural groups, dance groups, pre-professional groups, acapella groups and so much more. At Tufts, I found myself joining so many different organizations I never thought I would be a part of. Take advantage of this and try something new! You never know, you might be a pro at it or absolutely love it.
It is important to recognize that we are still in unprecedented times. There might be some uncertainty around what the academic year might look like, but Tufts continues to put their students first and work tirelessly to make sure we are safe. The Tufts I came into might be different from the one you are entering but don’t forget to make the most of it and make memories you will always cherish.
It’s normal to feel nervous or not find your place at Tufts immediately. You will find people and places that will make Tufts feel like a second home. Give yourself time and explore different opportunities. I cannot wait to see you all around campus this year. If you see me, give me a wave. Please feel free to add me on social media or send me an email at amma.agyei@tufts.edu if you have any questions or just want to say hi. Enjoy the rest of your summer and welcome to the herd! Go ‘Bos!!
Warm regards,
Amma Agyei
Tufts Community Union President
