Michael Castilleja Brings Friendly Conversation to Early Flights
Tillamook Market's Michael Castilleja (he/him) was nominated by a PDX traveler:
"Not a compliment on a product, but a person. I visited your Tillamook Market at PDX and was greeted by Michael. He had great conversational capacity and was a pleasure to talk to early on a Monday morning in the airport. As I waited for my order I saw the same interactions with several people.
I don’t currently have openings at my company’s Vancouver office for a dispatcher, but if I did, I would offer him that position on the spot as I would want him to be the front face to my customers."

What's New with PDX Next: Main Bag Road, Ticket Hall and Gate B3
Main Bag Road: For safety, the south end of main bag road is closed to facilitate structural demolition and roof moves. The new route for all vehicles entering main bag road from the south is via south bag road from the southeast corner of the alley. Pedestrians should stay on the north side of south bag road, while vehicle traffic remains on the south side. This change is in place until Spring 2025.
Ticket Hall: The walkway along the east window wall of the ticket hall is now closed for floor finish work through early Jan. 2025. Signage is in place to re-route pedestrians through the ticket lobby.
Gate B3: Gate B3 is now closed and has been converted to a construction area for crane erection and construction laydown for demolition and structure support activities. Alaska will use Gate B4 until this work is complete in March 2025.

Meet Fernanda Navilli, the Creative Mind Behind PDX’s Extraordinary Windows
Fernanda Navilli, creative director at dotdotdash, is one of the visionaries behind Extraordinary Windows – the 24-hour art installation above the main terminal’s security lines. From misty forests to desert sunsets, these video walls use cutting-edge Unreal Engine technology to reimagine Oregon’s beauty. Look closely, and you’ll spot hidden easter eggs like growing mushrooms, fluttering butterflies and even a puffin! Fernanda hiked more than 40 miles across Oregon to capture every detail, ensuring everyone at the airport can pause, connect and feel the magic of the Pacific Northwest.

Portland Tribune: Travelers Talk Thoughts on PDX Transformations
"“It’s so new and fresh, and it is so wide open compared to other airports.” “As soon as we came through the exit, it was like, wow, there’s no more walls everywhere, it’s actually open.” “There’s a 1,000% difference, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Those are just a few of the comments the Portland Tribune collected in their conversations with travelers and employees for the second feature in their four-part series about the airport. The consensus – from locals and visitors alike – is that the natural wood and light create a unique space that everyone can be proud of. Up next in the series: PDX's hyper-local businesses and merchants (Nov. 27) and the local artists and craftspeople who helped create the new airport (Dec. 4).

Honoring Transgender Day of Remembrance
Transgender Day of Remembrance is dedicated to honoring transgender individuals who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence and prejudice. On Nov. 20, communities come together to raise awareness about hate crimes and memorialize the victims, often holding vigils where their names are spoken aloud. In addition to these gatherings, other creative expressions including marches and art shows amplify the voices of transgender individuals, fostering solidarity and support. Take a moment to read the names and hold space for the lives of transgender folx who have passed due to violence this year and acknowledge the work that lies ahead of us.

PDX in Pictures
“For our daughter, giving her the opportunity to practice helps make a real travel experience more manageable and less scary. She gets to see new sounds and sights and go through security and knows what to expect on the day of real travel. Meeting with TSA and speaking to the flight attendants and pilots – hearing the engines go on – it all helps her to feel safer. It’s really wonderful.”
That's what parent Nate had to say about our recent Passport to Inclusion event, held in partnership with Alaska Airlines and the Autism Society of Oregon.
Passport to Inclusion allows individuals with disabilities to practice nearly every aspect of the travel experience at PDX – from entering the airport and going through security to taxiing around the tarmac to simulate a flight. Opportunities like this help lessen the stress someone may feel when traveling and help us provide more inclusive customer service for travelers with cognitive and developmental disabilities. Learn more about the experience on the Alaska Airlines blog.
