SMPA STUDENTS INTERVIEW DIRECTOR WAISBORD AHEAD OF NEW ACADEMIC YEAR 

As we begin a new academic year and with new leadership at the School of Media and Public Affairs, SMPA senior Mychael Schnell and gradaute student Gionelly Mills sat down with Director Waisbord to get to know him better and ask questions about his vision for the school.

"My goal is to basically continue the mission of the school.There are many things that are important to us that should be central, should be our main focus in terms of quality of education in journalism and political communciations, promoting diversity in our school and trying support professional development for all of our students." - Director Waisbord

A CONVERSATION ON THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN
Thursday, September 10 | 12-1pm ET
Hear directly from GW alumni reporting on the 2020 Presidential Campaign in a conversation moderated by Steve Roberts, the J.B. and M.C. Shapiro Professor of Media and Public Affairs. Jeremy Diamond, ESIA BA '15, CNN White House Correspondent covering the Trump administration, and Marianna Sotomayor, SMPA, BA '15, MA '16, campaign embed for NBC News covering the Biden campaign will share their experiences and insights on the race to the White House. This event is open to all GW alumni and will take place over Zoom.   
MEDIAFILE IS LOOKING FOR WRITERS & AN OPINIONS EDITOR!
MediaFile, an independent student-run publication tracking media news, is looking for staff reporters, multimedia producers, and more! Now in its fifth year, MediaFile is also looking for an opinions editor to lead the opinions section. The opinions editor will edit all opinions articles, generate story ideas and approve pitches, and promote articles on social media.

VIRTUAL COFFEE WITH SMPA ALUMNI
Monday, September 28 | 4-5pm ET

The Office of Alumni Relations is hosting a series of virtual coffee events with alumni this fall. On Monday, September 28th you can have coffee with SMPA alumna 
Rachel Jenkins. She currently manages Congressman Ryan's legislative agenda and leads the legislative team. She advises the Congressman on issues related to agriculture, health, labor, workforce development and job training, trade, and education.

SMPA CAN APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN FOR JUNIORS AND SENIORS 

The School of Media & Public Affairs Career Access Network (SMPA CAN) is a mentorship program committed to equipping undergraduate students with tools to excel both academically and professionally. In addition, through strategic and thoughtful programming, SMPA CAN seeks to expose its students as well as facilitate his/her/their matriculation at the George Washington University in a meaningful way that prepares the student for life after graduation. 

Qualifications/ Requirements: 
  • Applicants must be junior or senior to apply
  • Submit a cover letter and personal statement 
  • Unofficial Transcripts
  • Portfolio *Optional*

LET THE FIRE BURN! A SCREENING AND DISCUSSION WITH DIRECTOR JASON OSDER
Thursday, October 8 | 6pm ET

Let the Fire Burn is a documentary directed by Jason Osder about the decade-long conflict between the Philadelphia police and MOVE, a radical African American back-to-nature coming to a head. On Thursday, October 8th Temple Universtiy Library is having a screening and discussion afterwards with Professor Osder.

New Heights Communications partners with organizations doing cutting-edge work to win campaigns, influence public policy and change hearts and minds. Cheryl W. Thompson had an invesitgation published and aired on NPR titled Sex Offender Registries Often Fail Those They Are Designed To Protect. She was also a panelist for "Speakeasy: Casual Conversation, Serious Issues," sponsored by The Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism. She is also a founding board member of the newly created Center for Collaborative Investigative Journalism, which focuses on cross-border investigations
