Rubén Kihuen Accused of Making Unwanted Sexual Advances, Obama in Paris, and John Conyers' Nephew Ready to Run

It’s crunch time. Republicans are riding high off their victory after passing a sweeping tax overhaul in the Senate, and now Congress has until Friday to pass a bill to avoid a government shutdown. The current plan is to pass a two-week stopgap to give negotiators until December 22nd to reach an agreement. Dems (and some moderates GOPers) want to see legislative protection for “Dreamers” by the end of the year. Many Republicans are hoping to delay the contentious issue until March. In other news, CVS Health has agreed to buy the health insurer, Aetna, for $69 billion. But Trumping all of these stories is 45. Did he admit to obstructing justice when he tweeted, “I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI?” Many say yes, but his lawyer says no. John Dowd says his client “cannot obstruct justice because he is the chief law enforcement officer under [the Constitution's Article II] and has every right to express his view of any case.” Speaking to the press this morning, Trump defended himself (and Flynn) by asking, but what about Hillary? This comes on the heels of Trump criticizing the FBI by saying the agency is in tatters. Meanwhile, Billy Bush -- the only person who suffered any consequence of Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women -- squashed 45’s claims speculating that it wasn’t him on the Access Hollywood tape. It was you, Bush says. Oh, and Trump has officially endorsed accused pedophile Roy Moore in the Alabama Senate race. The president is heading to Utah this morning and will be greeted with the words ‘Go Home Trump’ spelled out by 113 protesters in white jumpsuits. The Kennedy Center Honors took place in DC over the weekend, and the President’s box remained empty as Trump boycotted the event. Speaking of babies, actor and activist Lin-Manuel Miranda is expecting his second with wife Vanessa Nadal. It was a busy weekend and will be a busy week. Let’s get started. We’re kicking off your Monday with this...

Campaign Staffer Says Kihuen Harassed Her; Pelosi Calls for Him to Step Down
Freshman Congressman Rubén Kihuen (D-NV) is accused of making repeated unwanted sexual advances toward his former campaign Finance Director. According to BuzzFeed, the woman identified as "Samantha" says Kihuen propositioned her for dates and sex despite her repeated rejections. She says that on two occasions, he touched her thighs without consent. Samantha said she spoke with a contact at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee to explain why she was quitting so abruptly and told the mid-level staffer, who is no longer with the DCCC, that Kihuen had done things that made her uncomfortable. Because the race was, at that point, still in the primaries, the DCCC had limited involvement in Kihuen’s campaign. In a statement Friday from his congressional office, Kihuen said, "The staff member in question was a valued member of my team. I sincerely apologize for anything that I may have said or done that made her feel uncomfortable. I take this matter seriously as it is not indicative of who I am. I was raised in a strong family that taught me to treat women with the utmost dignity and respect. I have spent my fifteen years in public service fighting for women’s equality, and I will continue to do so." House Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has called for Kihuen to step down. Kihuen has no plans to resign. More here.
Menéndez Asks To Have Charges Dismissed Two Weeks After Mistrial
Two weeks after his bribery trial ended in a hung jury, Senator Bob Menéndez (D-NJ) renewed his request to have the charges thrown out. The AP reports that his attorneys filed the motion Thursday on behalf of the New Jersey Democrat and his co-defendant and friend, Florida eye doctor Salomón Melgen. In their letter to Judge William Walls, defense attorneys wrote that "scrutiny of the evidence remains warranted, especially given the press statements by jurors and alternates about the lack of proof." Menéndez was charged with accepting free flights on a private jet and luxury vacations from Melgen in exchange for using his political influence with executive branch officials. He has repeatedly denied the charges since the mid-2015 indictment. The DOJ hasn’t announced whether it plans to retry the two men. More here.
POTUS in Paris
While in Paris on Saturday, former President Barack Obama expressed regret at the lack of American leadership in the global push to fight climate change, lamenting the fact that the U.S. was no longer involved with the Paris climate agreement. POTUS44 spoke at an invitation-only conference in France called the Napoleons. "I grant you that at the moment we have a temporary absence of American leadership on the issue," Obama said. But the U.S. remains on track to meet its targets, he said, thanks to the action of some states and cities and because it made "business sense."
He also called for more women to be put in positions of power "because men seem to be having some problems these days." POTUS44 said, "Not to generalize but women seem to have a better capacity than men do, partly because of their socialization." Earlier in the day, Obama had a two-hour private lunch with President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysée Palace, where the meeting was expected to include a presentation about the Obama Foundation. Obama also met with former French President Francois Hollande, who hosted the UN’s climate conference two years ago, and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. Obama was in China and India (where he met with the Dalai Lama for 45 minutes to discuss promoting peace) before he arrived in France. Speaking in India, Obama delivered a subtle jab at Trump, saying, "I've got 100 million Twitter followers. I actually have more than other people who use it more often." More here.

Mia Love Says STOP Those Sexual Harassment Payments in Congress
Congresswoman Mia Love (R-UT) says she is outraged by the use of taxpayer money to settle sexual harassment cases in Congress. Hence, she introduced a bill Friday to end the practice. The Stop Taxpayer Obligations to Perpetrators of Sexual Harassment (STOP) Act would end the practice of making payments to settle these cases on behalf of members of Congress. "Taxpayers should not be paying to settle these cases just because the accused happens to be a member of Congress," said the sole Black female Republican in Congress. "If someone behaves badly, the consequences to those actions are that person’s responsibility and no one else’s." More here.
José Serrano Intros Social Media Stop Hate Legislation
On Friday, Congressman José Serrano (D-NY) introduced legislation to address how social media and other forms of electronic communication have helped fuel the rise in hate crimes against certain minority groups around the country. The Stop HATE Act would direct the Departments of Commerce and Justice to analyze all new forms of electronic communications that have been developed since the rise of the internet in the early 1990s and issue a new report to Congress one year after enactment, and every five years, to continue assessing new forms of media. It would also include recommendations, consistent with the First Amendment, to address these threats. “As a member of Congress who avidly uses Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to communicate with my constituents, these electronic platforms that have become ingrained in our daily lives cannot be used to support and amplify hateful speech that seeks to demean or harm others,” said Serrano. CBC Members Intro Resolution Honoring Morehouse College
Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), joined by Morehouse grads Congressmen Sanford Bishop Jr. (D-GA) and Congressional Black Caucus Chair Cedric Richmond (D-LA), introduced on Friday a bipartisan resolution honoring the 150th anniversary of the founding of Morehouse College. "Morehouse students and graduates, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., ... encouraged generations of Americans, including me, to commit to improving ourselves and our communities. To this day, students, graduates, administrators, and professors in the Morehouse family continue to contribute to all aspects of American and global life and culture through business, arts, health, science, and public service." Read the full text of the resolution here.

Scott Staffer Heads to Civil Rights Corps
Kiara Pesante has announced that she is leaving Capitol Hill as the Communications Director on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce where she worked with Ranking Member Congressman Bobby Scott (D-VA). She’s heading to lead communications for the Civil Rights Corps, a nonprofit organization dedicated to challenging systemic injustice in the American legal system. The 2009 Auburn University grad earned her Master’s from Howard University before beginning her career in the office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) in 2010. Since then, she has done stints at Edelman and the DNC before joining Scott’s team in 2015. Her last day on the Hill will be Friday. More about her here.
Internet Association Taps Former Lobbyist to Head Seattle Office
The Internet Association -- which lobbies on behalf of top tech companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Airbnb, and Uber -- has named former lobbyist Rose Feliciano as the new Manager of Government Affairs for the Northwest. The Internet Association is anchored in DC and Feliciano will be charged with opening the Seattle office, which will focus on issues at the state and local level throughout the Northwest. The Seattle office will cover the broader Northwest, stretching out to Wyoming, the Dakotas, and Nebraska. This work can set the tone for regulations of internet companies across the country. On the national level, the group advocates for its members on issues such as net neutrality and immigration reform. The Carnegie Mellon grad joins the group after 15 years working in government relations for the city of Seattle. She also served as Special Assistant to former Commerce Department Secretary Gary Locke during his time as Governor of Washington. More here.
HRC Alumna Joins FCC Office
April Jones has joined FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn's office as a Policy Analyst and Special Assistant. She was most recently an attorney at Hausfeld LLP, where she focused on antitrust and consumer protection issues. Prior to that, she spent time on the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign as an organizer based in Charlotte, NC. The 2011 University of Southern California grad studied at the University of Oxford before completing law school in 2016 at George Washington University. She’ll be joining the FCC at an interesting time, as Clyburn has been a vocal critic of Chair Ajit Pai, who recently revealed his detailed plan to kill net neutrality. Jones, who clerked in the General Counsel’s Office at USTR, is ready to cut her teeth on the issue. More about her here.
GM Taps Former Top Uber Engineer for CTO Role
The former top Uber engineer AG Gangadhar has been hired as the Chief Technology Officer at Cruise, GM’s autonomous-driving subsidiary -- which hopes to have its first driverless cars on the roads in 2019. Gangadhar, who also previously worked at Google and Amazon, left Uber in July 2017 after two years. Gangadhar headed up Uber’s department that handled storage and data systems as well as developer infrastructure. This was the same department that former Uber engineer Susan Fowler wrote about in her damning essay on the sexual harassment and sexism she encountered in her year at the company. Fowler specifically referenced Gangadhar in her essay, though not by name. After graduating from the University of Mumbai and earning his Master’s from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Gangadhar began his career in 2001 in a number of engineering roles at Microsoft. Conyers Great-Nephew Poised to Pursue Uncle’s Seat in Congress
Michigan state Senator Ian Conyers tells BuzzFeed’s Darren Sands that if Congressman John Conyers (D-MI) steps down, he will run to take his great uncle's seat. On Thursday, the 29-year-old Conyers hosted a kickoff reception for his Senate re-election campaign in Detroit. The Georgetown University grad and member of Kappa Alpha Psi also worked briefly for former DC Mayor Adrian Fenty from 2010-2011. A former Democratic Party Treasurer for Michigan's 13th Congressional District, Ian was a Regional Field Director for Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign and is currently a Partner at Ruth Strategies. New Report Looks at Voters of Color and 2018
A new report from Third Way highlights the power voters of color will have in the midterm elections. Citing reports, the poll highlights that Dems must invest early and big in registering and turning out voters of color. The Senate map in 2018 is particularly foreboding. If they repeat their 2016 performance among White voters, Democrats could potentially pick up the Senate seats in Arizona and Nevada, but they would face strong headwinds in at least half a dozen Senate seats in Indiana, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, and West Virginia. Their total share of the electorate among voters of color was larger in 2016 than 2012, with Hillary Clinton getting essentially 90% of the Black vote and two-thirds each of the Latino and Asian American votes. The National Association of Diverse Consultants is urging the Party to hire consultants and staff who can better help understand the unique needs of these key communities. The report concludes that Dems must find a unifying message focused around economic opportunity, without ignoring the unique economic and societal struggles faced by people of color. Philly Resident Elected as Write-In Candidate and No One Else Voted
Phillip García
was elected as an election judge to serve on a board in Philadelphia after he wrote in his own name as a candidate for the position. He received a letter Friday saying he won an election earlier in the month -- apparently because no one else cast a vote. "I literally yelled 'what the hell' when I opened the letter," García told The Hill. "I've written my name in a few times during elections when no one else is listed for a position. It's just been a thing I do, with no expectation of, like, actually making an impact on the vote." García is an Editor-at-Large of The Rumpus and a Temple University Ph.D. candidate. García said two other candidates wrote their names on the ballot as well, but were likely declared ineligible to serve. More here.

Barry and Joe: The Animated Series Coming Soon
Earlier this year we told you about the adult animated series Barry and Joe: The Animated Series which follows former President Barack Obama and former VP Joe Biden as they travel back in time, with the help of Neil deGrasse Tyson, to right the wrongs of the past. After creator Adam Reid launched a Kickstarter campaign with the hopes of getting his dream off the ground, and surpassed his goal of $100,000, he is now one step closer to bringing this vision to the screen. Production company Titmouse and Conan O'Brien have attached their names to the show, serving as executive producers. "My nerdy heart is exploding," Reid said. "I'm hopeful we'll find a home for the series together, and I look forward to taking all our backers and new fans on the journey with us." More here.
Kaepernick Honored by ACLU
Colin Kaepernick was honored Sunday at the ACLU of Southern California’s annual Bill of Rights Dinner in Beverly Hills. He was awarded the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award, a recognition that was a surprise to event guests, who gave him a standing ovation. His name was not on the star-studded list of honorees released before the banquet that included
Gina Rodríguez, Reginald Hudlin, Dolores Huerta, Viola Davis, Jane Fonda, and Judd Apatow. “We all have an obligation no matter the risk, and regardless of reward, to stand up for our fellow men and women who are being oppressed with the understanding that human rights cannot be compromised,” 30-year-old Kaepernick told the crowd while accepting the award. Meanwhile, despite the NFL offering to provide nearly $90 million for causes deemed important by players -- with a special focus on issues facing African American communities -- players continued their peaceful protests on Sunday with at least 20 still taking a knee. More on Kaepernick here.

Joy-Ann Reid Apologizes for Old Homophobic Posts
MSNBC host Joy-Ann Reid has issued an apology for posts she wrote a decade ago on her old blog that used homophobic language about then-Florida Gov. Charlie Crist. Reid wrote multiple posts -- now deleted -- for her blog, The Reid Report, that contained homophobic conspiracies and anti-gay jokes. Reid referred to Crist as “Miss Charlie” and wrote, “I can just see poor Charlie on the honeymoon, ogling the male waiters and thinking to himself, ‘god, do I actually have to see her naked...?'” as Crist went on his honeymoon. Reid has issued an apology, saying, “Let me be clear: at no time have I intentionally sought to demean or harm the LGBT community, which includes people whom I deeply love. My goal, in my ham-handed way, was to call out potential hypocrisy. Nevertheless, as someone who is not a member of the LGBT community, I regret the way I addressed the complex issue of the closet and speculation on a person’s sexual orientation with a mocking tone and sarcasm. It was insensitive, tone deaf and dumb. There is no excusing it – not based on the taste-skewing mores of talk radio or the then-blogosphere, and not based on my intentions. In addition to friends and coworkers and viewers, I deeply apologize to Congressman Crist, who was the target of my thoughtlessness.” Read more here.

Sharpton Heading Soon to Libya Amidst International Outrage Over Slave Trade
National Action Network’s Rev. Al Sharpton says that he intends to lead a fact-finding mission to Libya with prominent clergy before Christmas, in the wake of reports that hundreds of African immigrants are being auctioned off as slaves each week. Sharpton says that it is "morally reprehensible" that the world has ignored the existence of slavery. A CNN video of men appearing to be sold at auction in Libya for $400 has brought international attention on the exploitation of migrants and refugees in the North African country. The grainy undercover video appears to show smugglers selling off a dozen men outside the capital city of Tripoli. TIME reports that on Wednesday, the leaders of Libya, France, Germany, Chad, Niger, and four other countries agreed on a plan to evacuate thousands of migrants stuck in Libyan detention camps. More about the slave trade here.
U.S. Withdraws from UN’s Global Compact on Migration
UN Ambassador Nikki Haley informed the United Nations that the U.S. will no longer take part in the global compact on migration which aims to ensure the rights of migrants, help them resettle, and provide them with access to education and jobs. The United States had been a part of the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants since it was formed last year. In explaining its withdrawal Saturday, Haley said the pact contains provisions that are inconsistent with the nation's immigration policies. "Our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone," she said. "We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country."
