Francisco Evanado
Francisco Evanado Finds Both Lost Passengers and Solutions
Francisco Evanado Jr. II (he/him) was nominated by a Port of Portland employee and Noah Juarez, Port of Portland:
Nomination 1: "Francisco assisted a family who was looking for a missing family member. He landed at PDX but never exited the concourse, and only spoke Chuukese. The airlines and police assisted as they could, but neither was able to locate the missing man.
After an hour, Francisco located the missing individual. Unfortunately, his waiting family couldn't be found and there was no way to contact them. For three hours, Francisco rallied translators, used Facebook messenger and contacted a cousin in Idaho until he eventually found the family members.
While this was not technically his (or anyone's) job, it was nonetheless a job that needed to be done. I'm grateful Francisco was on duty that afternoon – no doubt the family is as well."
Nomination 2: "Recently Francisco responded to a distraught person who drove her camper into the parking garage. It turned out to be too low for her vehicle and she got stuck. Francisco reached out for assistance from SP+ Parking and Port personnel to help free the vehicle. He also used his people skills to calm down the frustrated driver while continuing to work on a solution. After a lot of teamwork, critical thinking and extra special effort from Francisco, the vehicle was freed and exited safely from the garage."

Sankofa Lumber’s Valerie Carey Repurposes Wood Scraps from PDX
When the new main terminal opens, most of the concession stands will be clad in Valerie Carey’s innovative recycled-wood panels. You won’t be able to see the results of her hard work, though – and that’s fine by her. Valerie owns Portland’s Sankofa Lumber, a two-year-old company that collects wood waste from construction companies, then sells it back to builders in the form of pre-cut lumber and her SecondStory line of architectural panels made from recycled plywood or particle board. The reason you won’t see Sankofa’s wood panels – which are made from scraps of mass timber left over from constructing PDX’s new roof – is that they’ll be covered in white-oak veneers made by Salem-based Zena Forest Projects. Read on to learn what Sankofa means, where Valerie finds inspiration, and what it means to be part of PDX.

Giving Back: Donation Opportunities
Many folks look for ways to support their community during the holiday season. Conveniently, there are two donation opportunities on-site now at PDX.
Warm Clothing Drive: Now through Wednesday, Nov. 30, in partnership with the Port of Portland's Veterans employee resource group, we're hosting a warm clothing drive and you're encouraged to bring in gently used blankets, boots, jeans, gloves, hats, coats and cold weather gear to be donated to the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center. There's a drop box on the first floor of the Port of Portland HQ building, near the Anchor conference room. In appreciation of your generous gift, there's an American flag lapel pin for all who donate – submit this form to receive your pin.
Toys for TotsOur PDX TSA team is partnering with the Marine Corps Reserves on the annual Toys for Tots campaign, and there are convenient drop-off points at the airport. If you'd like to participate, please donate a new, unwrapped toy with at least a $10 value. Collection bins are in the TSA office (Rental Car Center, 2nd floor), ROCC (RCC, 4th floor) and the TSA north oversize station (next to the Southwest ticket counter). Toy pick-up will be on Thursday, December 14.
Native American Heritage Month
November is Native American Heritage Month
What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the United States is now a full month designated for that purpose.
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November 1990 “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations with variations of that name –including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month” – have been issued each year since 1994.
This month, we encourage you to:
