Dear Postdoctoral Community,
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a restful break and have been able to return to your work recharged.
I would like to thank you all for your continued resilience during the Covid-19 Omicron surge that we are experiencing. Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center's landscape changes quickly, and I want to commend you for your efforts to help keep our community safe. I encourage you to read the updated policies for both the University and VUMC using the links below.
We are excited to start planning this year's Postdoc Symposium which will be held on Thursday, October 27, 2022. I encourage you to get involved in the planning process and put your mark on the symposium.
The start of the new year is always an exciting time to plan for the year ahead. I look forward to the great things you will do in 2022. If I can be of assistance to you, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Updated Health and Safety Protocols
Vanderbilt University has made the health and safety of our students, faculty, staff, and postdocs, and our surrounding communities a top priority. University leadership held a town hall on Friday, January 7th which can be viewed here. This town hall outlined the testing procedures for University employees for the Spring semester. For more information on University protocols, visit the Health and Wellness website.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center will now require all employees eligible to receive a COVID-19 booster vaccination to do so by January 31, 2022, unless they have an approved exemption from the COVID-19 vaccination requirement.
Employees not yet eligible for the booster will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine booster within 30 days after becoming eligible unless they have an approved exemption. Happy New Year, Postdocs! I hope this finds you well (and warm!). I wanted to reach out with a few Academic Life Coaching updates. Some of you may have previously connected with Dr. Nadine De La Rosa who was our Academic Life Coach contact for postdocs in the Fall 2021 term. As Dr. De La Rosa is transitioning to a new position, I wanted to make sure to introduce myself to you as your ongoing contact for Academic Life Coaching. Please feel free to reach out to me via email or schedule an appointment to meet if I can support you in doing your best work at Vanderbilt – whether that be with progress and productivity matters or navigating academic relationships.
I will be holding a CliftonStrengths workshop series for postdocs at 12:00 p.m. on February 15, March 1, and March 15. This will be a three-part workshop focusing on knowing your strengths and leveraging them to sharpen your skills, improve your problem-solving, and allow you to aim your strengths at success. Register here for the series. The deadline to register is February 8.
I would like to highlight our Peak Performance series that is scheduled virtually for Spring 2022 and is open to all graduate students and postdocs. I present these sessions with colleagues from the University Counseling Center.

Libraries' Digital Scholarship and Communications
During the first part of the spring semester, the Libraries' Digital Scholarship and Communications (DiSC) Office is offering a series of free lessons and workshops to help you build your technical skills.
The Introduction to R using RStudio Cloud will introduce beginners to this popular programming platform commonly used for data wrangling, statistical analysis, and data visualization. The RStudio Cloud platform allows learners to code immediately without any installation.
The GitHub series will cover basic version control, project management tools, and building a free professional website using Pages. These lessons use GitHub Desktop, which allows you to manage your repositories without using the command line.
The GIS workshops will introduce you to the basics of geographic information systems using ESRI's ArcPro, open-source QGIS, and the highly accessible ArcGIS Online.

SmartSkills is a free, virtual course for postdocs who are members of the National Postdoc Association. Monthly classes are taught by experts and focus on building skills critical to career and personal success. Postdocs can earn a certificate by the NPA by attending 10 out of 12 skills classes.
