International Shipments/Hand-Carrying of GVSU-Owned Items
The US Census Bureau requires an Electronic Export Information (EEI) filing for certain international shipments depending on the item(s) and value. EEIs are also required when hand-carrying items (including laptops and phones) to China, Russia, and Venezuela. Please contact the ORCI at least five business days before sending international packages that require an EEI filing and at least 10 business days prior to departing the US with GVSU-owned items to the aforementioned countries. ORCI will review the EEI filing requirements and help ensure the EEI filing is completed by the required deadline, as well as determine if an export license is required.

Q: I received a letter from the IRB stating my research project was determined to be "not research." What does this mean?
A: The federal regulations have a very specific definition for "research": "Research means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge." If you received a "not research" letter, it means the IRB determined your proposed activity did not meet this definition. IRB review and approval are only required for projects that meet the federal definition of "research" and involve human subjects.
