SARS-CoV-2 Testing Continues

We began our second phase of SARS-CoV-2 testing on Monday. Following this, on-campus testing will be considered surveillance testing. Today, we will conclude with Outdoor Adventure, Farming, Strength & Conditioning, and Volleyball. Testing is at 3:10 PM at the outdoor basketball court near the Health Clinic. Testing should not take more than thirty minutes.

The 4-County Active Case Rate

As of Tuesday, the seven-day average active case rate is .38%. A seven-day average active case rate of .5% or above would trigger a move to online learning for all classes.

Did You Get the Emergency Text?

Last week, we tested our emergency text system for students and employees. TODAY at 10:00 a.m. we sent a test text message to our students' PARENTS. If you DID NOT receive a text message, either log in to CORE and update your cell phone information or send your information to Director of Communications Sherri Bergman. It is our practice to only use the text system for emergencies, school closings, or delays. Students and employees may also receive weather alerts.

School Picture Day, SEP 8

Strawbridge Studios will be taking yearbook photos on September 8. It is free to have your photo taken. Parents of students in grades 6-11 will be offered a set package and may purchase the entire package or any part of the package. Purchases will be made through the studio's website. Parents can then return the unwanted packages to their school. Unpurchased images are returned to Strawbridge Studios and recycled using a secure recycling program.

Senior Portraits

Seniors who would like their portrait taken in formal dress should plan to wear it to school on September 8. There will be no photographer-provided drapes due to COVID-19. Seniors will pose for outdoor and casual photos by appointment on October 21. Seniors will be able to purchase photos from online proofs.

Questions? Contact Yearbook Advisor Chris Monahan.

Watching SAS Athletes

Soccer and volleyball fans can catch our games LIVE with a subscription to the NFHS network. This is also a great way to safely cheer on our players who are playing with the Grundy County High School football team.

Current Team-Specific Plans:

Cross Country: Hosting two events and traveling to The Webb School. No fans will be at the home competitions.

Golf: Playing a full schedule, but will not host home events due to the Course at Sewanee being closed to the public.

Mountain Biking: Competing virtually by traveling to various competition sites to race and compare their times to other schools.

Girls' Soccer: Playing a modified schedule against teams that follow similar COVID-19 protocols as SAS. Fans, masked and appropriately distanced, will be allowed.

Volleyball: Playing a modified schedule against teams that follow similar COVID-19 protocols as SAS. Due to our gym size, we will not have fans at home events.

Welcoming College Recruiters

Colleges and universities began virtual recruitment events for our juniors and seniors on Monday. Eight schools will "visit" this week in a season that usually sees 50-60 colleges recruiting at SAS. In addition to the visits being posted on the school calendar and in daily announcements, juniors and seniors receive a weekly email with a list of colleges for the upcoming week. Students must pre-register through SCOIR (our college search system). Questions Contact Director of College Counseling Dan Monahan.

Congratulations!

With an offer in hand from Tennessee Tech, Meredith Foster '21 earned the honor of being the first member of her class admitted to college. It is Mr. Monahan's practice to announce the first letter of admission to kick off the season and then only announce student commitments. We look forward to announcing these as our seniors make their decisions.

Online Learners & Absent Students

Is My Class Available Via Zoom or Will I Work Asynchronously?

Students who are learning online or who are absent from school for other reasons will not always access their class via a Zoom link. For some classes, students will work synchronously by connecting via Zoom at the time the class is scheduled, but for other classes students will work asynchronously (independently). Students and parents should check the class Bulletin Boards in CORE for information about how they will interact with their classes. If connecting via Zoom is an option, links will be available on the class Bulletin Boards. Teachers will not send Zoom links via email. If students are absent due to illness and unable to complete work at home, they will be given the opportunity to make up work upon their return school.

Withholding Media Permission

St. Andrewʼs-Sewanee School recognizes the value of media and social media in allowing our community to strengthen and maintain connections. Each year the school requests permission from parents/guardians for the use of their child’s name, image, likeness, and voice to be used by SAS in photographs, videos, publications, and web pages and to be distributed by SAS to media outlets.
In our transition to a new registration system, this was left out of this year's forms. If you wish to WITHHOLD permission for SAS to use your child's images, words, and/or work, please email Director of Communication & Marketing Sherri Bergman.
The SAS Handbook encourages students to obtain permission from a friend, classmate, or SAS employee before posting their image online. If there is a complaint, a student is required to respond immediately by taking down the image. It is considered a serious discipline violation to use photographs in a negative or demeaning way, electronic or otherwise.

Join Us for Chapel

We live Zoom our Chapel every Wednesday at 12:45 p.m., and you are welcome to join us! Click on this link. If it asks for a password type in "&alsowyou" (see what we did there?). The link will stay the same week-to-week so save it for future use. We'll also include it in our weekly calendar below.

Your SAS/COVID-19 Questions Answered

Are SAS athletic teams competing with other schools?

The decision of whether to compete has been made on a team-by-team (see above) and school-by-school basis based on the exposure that the sport involves and the protocols being observed by competitor schools. Due to the size of our facilities and the difficulty in policing compliance, SAS will only allow fans at home soccer games. Home volleyball and soccer matches and some away matches will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network.

How does SAS decide which teams it will compete against?

Coaches of opposing teams are asked the following questions before the competition is approved by SAS's Director of Athletics.
  1. Do your athletes undergo a temperature check and health screening each day?
  2. Are students at your school required to wear face coverings during the school day and maintain recommended physical distancing?
  3. (For away contests) If indoors, will total attendance, including athletes, coaches, and officials, be less than 50 with face coverings for non-athletes and recommended physical distancing?
A negative response to any of these questions will make a team ineligible for competition with SAS.
