Congratulations to Dean Ann Brill on being named Administrator of the Year by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). During her time as dean, Brill has guided the school through three successful ACEJMC re-accreditations, grown research, endowment, scholarships and enrollment, and created a culture of excellence and achievement.

The American Advertising Foundation (AAF) has introduced the Sean Finnegan Memorial Scholarship this year. This scholarship includes $10,000 as well as registration and travel accommodations to ADMERICA, AAF's national conference in June. The scholarship is for a college sophomore, junior or senior. The deadline for this scholarship application is March 1.
Fellowship deadline March 4: The deadline to apply for the Allbritton Journalism Institute ’s 2024-2026 Reporting Fellowship is March 4. Here is the application form. AJI — a nonprofit organization backed by a $20 million grant from Robert Allbritton, the founding publisher of POLITICO — is offering $60,000 annual stipends to aspiring or early-career reporters to spend up to two years in Washington studying journalism and writing for NOTUS, a new, nonpartisan publication covering government, policy and politics.

The KC Ad Club’s 2024-25 Foundation Scholarship application is now open. The scholarship has been awarded for over 30 years and helps students set themselves apart from their peers and get involved in the thriving Kansas City advertising community. Current sophomores and juniors interested in marketing, graphic arts and related fields are encouraged to apply. Assistant Professor Chris Etheridge and a team of researchers across four other universities recently published a study in The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science titled "Who Will Tell the Stories of Health Inequities? Platform Challenges (and Opportunities) in Local Civic Information Infrastructure." In the piece they argue that despite shrinking newsrooms, news outlets are still leading the way in raising uncomfortable health and race questions, while other community organizations are still shying away from these kinds of topics online. Associate Professor Mugur Geana invites all those interested in psychophysiology and it's application in media effects research to attend the Wednesday, 2/28 session of the Experimental Research Group. The meeting will include a lecture by Professor Paul Bolls, Washington State University. The meeting is facilitated by the Center for Excellence in Health Communication to Underserved Populations. Associate Professor of the Practice Lisa McLendon presented February’s ACES Academy webinar, “Nuts and Bolts Punctuation.” It’s her third contribution to the ACES Academy, a bank of online training courses for editors.
A manuscript coauthored by Doctoral Candidate Yiwen Wu from the School of Public Affairs and Administration, JMC School Doctoral Student Hannah Ha, Associate Professor Hong Vu, and Doctoral Student Giang Truong Nguyen from University of Tennessee has been accepted for presentation at the West Coast Nonprofit Data Conference. The study, which is titled “Compassionate Communication by NGOs? A Quantitative Evaluation of NGO’s Messages on Climate Impacts,” uses machine learning techniques to investigate several aspects of compassionate communication on social media by environmental NGOs across the United States.

Marian Cromley died Feb. 9 at age 96. Read her obituary. She was the managing editor of the University Daily Kansan and graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She wrote food and lifestyle features for The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times and other publications.
Margaret Spencer died January 17 at age 67. Read her obituary.
