Meeting the Needs in North Carolina

With only two more months left in our fiscal year, BEGINNINGS is happy to report that we have continued to increase our services. From July 1, 2021 through April 30, 2022, we have served a total of 1,126 families in the state.
More than 40% of our families have children who are identified with hearing challenges between birth and three months, which is a testament to North Carolina's commitment to newborn screenings. This means that our Parent Educators are able to begin working early with parents, knowing that immediate services make a big difference in childhood development. However, we continue to work with parents of children at ALL levels, from birth to age 22, who are deaf or hard of hearing. During 2022, we will be especially focusing upon helping our older children in their Transition to Adulthood.

"A Light in a Dark Time"

Our families say it best about BEGINNINGS: We serve as a light in a dark time, helping parents and caregivers understand their children's hearing challenges, and formulating plans for proactive education, understanding, and intervention.

Parent Educator Q&A

Q: Tell us a little about your background.

A: I’m from Puerto Rico but have called North Carolina home for a long time.  I have over 20 years working in community health outreach and education.  Early in my career I worked supporting migrant families finding resources and navigating the school system, but I have also always been driven to bridging the gap of health inequities.
