LegalEase Webinar: Tradecraft of journalism in the age of surveillance
Hi SCPA member,
In 2018, it may be harder to ensure source confidentiality than in the days of “Deep Throat.”
Reporters now have more tools, devices and technology to use as they gather and report news, which brings added responsibility and challenges in protecting their sources and collected information and keeping data safe.

Join us for a free online discussion Friday, Nov. 2, from 2-3 p.m. as we discuss the tradecraft of journalism in an age of surveillance. Panelists include SCPA Attorney Jay Bender, Assistant Professor Eric Robinson from the USC School of Journalism and Mass Communications and SCPA Director of Operations Randall Savely. During the webinar, we’ll discuss:
  • Dealing with and protecting confidential sources
  • How pervasive "lawful" surveillance technology has become
  • How safe is the information you gather?
  • How secure are your phone, emails, text messages and social media posts?
  • Can your movements be traced at in-person meetings?
  • First Amendment protections and ethical considerations
  • Importance of verifying facts and backing up reporting with other sources, documents, etc.
  • What do I do if subpoenaed for notes, records or photos? Should I keep my notes after a story is published?
We’ll also offer tools, strategies and tips to maximize your security, including:
  • VPNs and encrypted messaging services
    • What are they used for?
    • Are they legal?
    • What are the best providers?
  • Tried and true traditional gumshoe journalism methods that don’t require technology
You may not run right out to buy a burner phone, but this is a timely, interesting topic and you’ll leave the discussion with some practical takeaways.

This online discussion is part of SCPA's free LegalEase Web series, sponsored by the SCPA Foundation Smoak Fund. There is no cost for you or your staffers to participate, but you must register in advance so we can send you the log-in instructions. This webinar is open to SCPA members only.
