Your Impact: SYA Capstone
|
A Culmination of the SYA Experience
Designed to provide SYAers with an opportunity to showcase their evolving skills, the capstone is a comprehensive project on a topic that captures their imagination and interest. Whether it’s Ellison’s project on incorporating elements of places around Italy into a fashion design, or Monique’s quest to learn more about Francoism based on her parents’ encounter with the Khmer Rouge, capstone projects are as diverse as each student’s experience.Your generous support of the SYA Fund helps bring these projects to life for our students. Thank you. If you haven’t yet made an SYA Fund gift, please consider doing so before June 30.

As Pascal Montéville leaves SYA France after more than 35 years of remarkable service to his students, what better way to capture his many accomplishments and the admiration he garnered from those he taught than to reproduce here two homages.

Ad Hardin FR'85, chair of the SYA Fund, wrote in his spring letter that SYA has more than 50 years of experience, but we're anything but old school. Sure, students have their share of conjugating verbs, but they're not locked up in lectures and study halls.

Scores of SYAers have careers centered around academia: from early childhood education to community-centered instruction.
This month you will find the third installment of alumni who teach at the secondary education level. (There's still time to add your name to the compilation.)

In "Is it Easter Already,"? Linda recalls the first days sitting blankly at the host family dinner table to becoming the “their little American” actively participating in conversation, reflecting on how French language and culture are now ingrained indelibly in her life.
In "The Master of Going With the Flow," Lorna has learned to let go of planning and making itineraries and to relish the element of surprise. She is eager to say “yes” and is rewarded with every opportunity.
In "Spring in Zaragoza," Abby is determined to soak in every detail of her surroundings in the short time left. To memorize sounds and tastes of her year so that her time at SYA will hold a sense of permanence.
