Dustin Thompson
Dustin Thompson is a Calming Influence for Passengers in Need
TSA officer Dustin Thompson was nominated by Kenyan McCray, a TSA colleague.
"Supervisor Dustin Thompson was at the checkpoint, working at the walk-through metal detector during the Spring Break rush. He noticed an individual in the TSA queue who appeared to have some hesitation going through security.
After some careful observation, Dustin approached the individual and offered his assistance, if needed. At this point, it was clear the person was distressed, crying and having trouble communicating. They were able to share they were having – in their words – an anxiety attack. Dustin offered his name and any assistance that he could provide.
Noticing that the traveler was still quite upset, Dustin guided them to an empty section of the queue and provided a seat and some tissues. By instructing the person in calming methods (controlled breathing and the 3-3-3 technique), Dustin helped the passenger get to a point where they were able to communicate effectively.
Thanks to the support and quick action of Dustin Thompson, this passenger was able to make their own choice to fly another day."

PDX Employee Interfaith Prayer Room Opens in New Location
Last week, the employee-only Interfaith Prayer Room opened in its new location. The room is at the end of the hallway directly north of the Lost and Found office on the mezzanine level. Currently, the door is unlocked, but there is a cipher lock (code: 2846).
As always, being respectful is a PDX People core value, which includes your actions toward other airport workers and shared spaces. With that in mind, please note a few guidelines for the room:
  • Please be respectful of all occupants.
  • Enter and exit in a quiet and peaceful manner.
  • Reserve all conversation for outside this space.
  • Food and beverages are prohibited.
  • Do not leave personal belongings in this space.

Celebrating YOU with PDX People Appreciation Week
Our annual PDX People employee appreciation celebration starts next Monday, Sept. 16, through Friday, Sept. 20, and – no matter where you work at the airport – there’s sure to be an event happening near you. Plus, we’ll have free food and exclusive PDX People gear!
While the theme of the week has always been gratitude for airport employees, this year we're especially thankful for your support, grace and hard work as we crossed the finish line and opened the new main terminal.
Throughout closures and changes, PDX People continued to provide top-notch friendly, knowledgeable and respectful customer service. Now we're saying THANK YOU for going the extra mile – on carpet and terrazzo! – and sharing your PDX pride with each and every traveler at our airport. See the full schedule of events and download the flier to post in your workspace or breakroom.
