PET PORTRAITS WITH SANTA

Friday, December 14th, starting at 1pm
Karr Activity Center
2603 Warm Hearth Drive, Blacksburg

Our very own Santa (resident Roger Avery) will be in a jolly mood for a picture with your pet! All are invited and we ask that all dogs be on a leash and cats be brought in a carrier.  Dog portraits will begin at 1pm and cats will begin at approximately 1:30.  Mini bags of treats for both dogs and cats will be available while supplies last.  Would you like to help other pets?  Feel free to bring in your pocket change to donate to Micah’s Pets. Contact Mardy Baker at 540-443-3434 for more information.

VIRGINIA TECH INDUSTRIAL DESIGN STUDENTS DESIGN FOR SENIORS

Since 2013, Loring Bixler, a Warm Hearth resident, has been a guest instructor in the Industrial Design program in the School of Architecture at Virginia Tech.  Over the years, he has worked with Warm Hearth staff and Virginia Tech faculty to bring a collaborative design program to the village.

Each fall, juniors interview Warm Hearth residents for input on ideas aimed at limiting isolation, increasing fitness and mobility and promoting independence. Student teams then create prototypes and finally present their final products.

This year, students proposed a self-propelled bike to promote fitness, community garden concepts to combat isolation, a downsized and easy-to-use kitchen, a portable grab bar and a lighted cane.
THANKFUL FOR A FRUITFUL NOVEMBER
November was a fruitful month for the Warm Hearth Foundation. The New River Valley Association of Realtors donated $2,000 worth of items for the Micah’s Personal Care program. In early December, these items will be distributed to low-income seniors living at Warm Hearth Village. Additionally, the Foundation participated in the NRV Glean Team’s annual potato drop, picking up, sorting, and bagging over 1,000 pounds of potatoes and delivering them to seniors on our campus with the help of an enthusiastic group of volunteers! Thank you NRV Association of Realtors and the NRV Glean Team for your support! If you or your company or organization is interested in getting involved, please contact Karen Nelson at 540-443-3406 for more information.

SKIP RECEIVES COMMUNITY RECOGNITION
The Community Foundation recently awarded The Warm Hearth Foundation a $3,900 grant to help fund Seniors & Kids In Play (SKIP). Warm Hearth Foundation, Head Start and The Children’s Museum of Blacksburg are collaborating on this intergenerational endeavor that replaces the Foster Grandparents program. Village residents and children from Head Start meet at the museum every first and third Friday of the month and all benefit from the social engagement through creative play, crafting, and games. Marian Kelso, a resident at Warm Hearth says, "What a great experience for the children and equal fun for the seniors and volunteers!" If you would like to volunteer at SKIP one Friday morning please contact Mardy Baker at 540-443-3434.
